possible dumb mistake
« on: February 14, 2009, 04:32:49 PM »
i have a 78 CB550k if i am sitting on the bike what is the firing order and which coil wires go where because i suspect i am running on 2 cylinders after reinstalling my coils and plug wires.I suspect this because when i throttle it up it wants to bog and when i touch the header pipes 2 pipes are real hot and the other 2 are not.  it idles fine but i am getting some popping under hard acceleration so i am wondering if i have wrong plug wires on the wrong plugs the bike ran good prior to me fiddling with it.I should mention i changed my spark plugs to ngk Dr81x which is iridium and colder.I also just got my tank back on after taking it off to paint and damn it came out nice with matching side covers and powder coated fenders all in black

The coils should have spark plugs 1-4 and 2-3.  I guess maybe you could've misrouted the wires.  Not sure what switching 2 and 3 would do, but I pretty sure they fire at the same time.  So unless one of the wires from 1-4 w/ the others, I think that might work.  Kinda hard to do as the boots differ, stock anyways.
Did it do this before you changed plugs?

i think i"ve realized my mistake as i have wires off one coil plugged to #4 and # 3 and the other coil powering up #1 and #2 which probably explains why it runs like that .had a hard time starting it initially.could i have damaged anything by doing this as i let it idle for 20 min like that?

Nice looking 550 you got there. How did you paint it (what method?) I have an extra tank and side covers that I am doing mine in white.  I like your seat, is that stock for that year.

Not likely you damaged anything. Maybe dirtied up a couple of plugs. I'm surprised it ran at all!

How'd you like that 275cc twin?   ;D

Actually, now that i think of it, if it ran for 20 minutes... Think of this. Two cylinders were receiving intake charge (gasoline) without burning it. Lots blew out the exhaust pipe for sure, and dirtied those plugs, but some ran down the cylinder walls and polluted your oil with raw gas.

I'd change the oil.

i will change the oil now that you mention it thanks. As for the seat i built a whole new seat pan from 18 gauge sheet metal i had and covered it with high density foam and then a layer of memory foam.I wanted a single seat but then thought about it and realized i wouldn't be able to take my son or daughter for rides so i added the back section to it again. With the paint i stripped the tank to bare metal filled in the 2 small dents with fiberglass bondo and sanded then over top again with filler to cover the air pockets that fiberglass left sprayed everything with etch primer checked for imperfections again primer again let dry spayed with black base and 4 coats of clear.i originally wanted to powdercoat  everything but was told could not do it with filler so i just had my fenders and engine covers done instead.

Good on the oil change.

I've learned a lot about powdercoating, still haven't done it yet. One was as you say. Bondo, jbweld, even brazing, the powdercoaters won't guarantee that such work will remain intact. This is because of different expansion rates in the ovens. Fillers will pop out.

I'm doing a lot to my frame, keep thinking of new things. All things must be done before the PC, as once its done, its done. Now I'm struggling with rear turn signal mounts. They must be setback to clear my occasional use of saddlebags.

Waiting for pics of your paint.  :D
