has anybody tried to just swap the worm gear from a 650 into a 550 cam cover? or is it pressed/permanant/ unreplaceable? seems easier/cheaper than going the electronic tach route.

and, if i cant swap-how do i remove it?

If I remember right, isn't it just attached by a screw on the outside of the housing?
I don't remember it being much of a puzzle to remove.

oh! duh.  ok i got it out, is a 650 worm gear a direct replacement(part numbers are different)? im also sure i have to go with a 650 tach.



i did some searching-650 cam worm gear will fit in the 55o according to a 650/550 hybrid forum.

FYI, just because I've been going through some of the same research, etc that you are-

You probably already know that the 550 has a different tach ratio (is 20:3) from the 650, BUT
the 750 is the same ratio as the 650, which is 4:1, which there are also a number of aftermarket parts for. I say that because I think there's a few more 750 parts out there than 650 parts.....
