Cool Choice!  Sounds like one is more fashion, and one practical.

I ride in a custom Schott 641 HH a lot of the time.  It was a pretty penny, but will wear for many years.

Yeah, The Tourmaster Coaster II has all the armor pieces and everything, but I bought that Hoodlum Jacket, and it's just so good looking I'll find some use for it :)

Gear is always a goofy subject. Everyone has different ideas on cost and such. I do NOT believe you get what you pay for. THAT is bull.If you are buying expensive stuff on the idea it is best, you would be wrong in many cases. I got some cheap boots for riding that are fairly comfortable, all leather, well constructed, and thick. You can bet I did not spend anywhere close to $100 for them, more like 40 and maybe they might not be uber super spaceman stuff, they will probably do the job just as good as anything else.

I also got a jacket from jc whitney. It is a mossi and it is constructed very well. Most of the seams are triple stitched and some areas are quad stitched. The outer layer is a thick textile with a couple thinner layers underneath along with the shoulder and elbow armor about 5/8th inch thick AND dual density. it also has a padded neck line and back panel. It has vents under the arms and along the back. the shoulder and elbows are also reinforced.

I got cheap gloves that are ok though. Nothing super. they will still protect but I do want to get better gloves. in this case, cheap did not do good but then you can get a pair of $30 gloves that will probably do as good as $100 gloves.

My helmet is also another weak area. It is a modular and while that is not bad on its own, the chin bar hooks are not very good. It is still better than no helmet or a half helmet but it is still a weak point. The rest seems built very well and at the time, the price was right. When I can I will probably get an hjc symax2.

I have no riding pants. I am sure that is a HUGE no-no to some. Well I guess maybe they have never been poor.
If you cant get riding pants, get good jeans such as carhart. They are thicker than regular jeans and so will hold up better, then when you can, get OVERpants or larger riding pants that you can wear as over pants. Then you can wear shorts if you want and are still covered.

Bottom line, do not buy just because of brand. Look at the items, fell them, try them on. Pull on the seams. If you do this, you will see what is good and what is not and you might save some cash that you would have spent buying blindly on the idea that good always costs more.

So I guess you DO get what you pay for but that does not mean buying stupid.

Ok so I ended up going with a river road hoodlum jacket for it's sexiness

That is the same one I have hahah

I just picked up a cool Marlon Brando style jacket for $50 at tatters (thrift store) the other day, it's awesome.

Also found a pair of all leather Corcoran jump boots, sixteen inch, for $30. Just like the ones I had when I was in Japan. Awesome boots.

Very good advice Eldar, and rest assured in all things, I strive to get my money's worth, whether it's 5 bucks or 1000 :)  I may just use my work gloves as riding gloves, they're kevlar lined, so that can't be bad.  We'll see.

Caaveman, yep, I have a similar pair of boots for...similar reasons :)

You do not need kevlar and other exotic stuff. A well stitched, thick leather glove will be absolutely fine. If it is padded on the palms, even better. I know the whole "kevlar is best" thing but have you seen what happens when it splinters? I suppose if you hit that hard though, what difference does it make. :-\

sure I don't need exotic materials, but I have the kevlar gloves in hand, and would have to buy the leather gloves.  So until I find some leather gloves I fall in love with, the free alternative is best ;)

Well that is different! I mean if you already have them, then use em. One thing to watch out for with gloves are where they crease. It might not be noticeable in a couple minutes but if the gloves bunch in the wrong spots, it can make your hands go numb.

My old man started longboarding and he bought a BRIGHT @$$ yellow kevlar shirt, he wiped out a lot in the begining, while he still got bruised up, not one bit of road rash though, I understand that longboarding is slower than eating it on a motorcycle, but still the shirt held up well, they also make kevlar jeans.

Plus I had a kevlar helmet once... damn glad, many times, that I did have it lol.

eldar... research kevlar.

there are different types, such as the kind that is fabric like.  most of the kevlar stuff i see on bike apparel is of this type.  the hard stuff is usually carbon fiber or metal, from what i've seen, although there is quite a bit of the kevlar material you talk about too.

i worked in a steel supply yard for several years when i was younger and we were required to wear kevlar sleeves if all we had was a tshirt in the summer... steel is sharp!  it amazingly did the trick even though it felt just like a long sleeve shirt.  that was after getting over the humor of wearing arm socks.   :D

+1

Kevlar is actually a type of super fiber, to my understanding. Which can be woven into a shirt... or super tight into a sapping plate or helmet that saved my poor skull from being fractured lol

I am not saying it is bad stuff just that other stuff may do just as well at lower cost. Plus that hard stuff, if it breaks will probably splinter some but as I said, at that force, it probably does not matter.

In light of posts in another thread, I might have to check out the reinforced knuckles.

yeah, I'd kind of poo-pooed them as a 'looks' thing but if people say they're really effective, well...

I used to ride bicycle a lot and after wrecking a couple times and putting my hands down to save my face, I truly value a good pair of gloves.

That being said (I'm a mountain biker myself, and have dumed plenty of times)

If they could only somehow work the same magic as on those rollerblading gloves that have the piece to protect your palm/wrist, without interfering on the bike, that'd rock.  Dunno how it'd be possible though

I've got a pair of leather gloves with the carbon fiber knuckle guards.

The way I see it is, as a machinist, without my hands, I'm done.

what brand?  I was looking at Scorpion Exo Stinger gloves, a real retro-look perforated and armored black glove... don't wanna break the bank or anything.

As an artist and soon-to-be xray tech, without my hands I'm in a world of poo, too.

Yeah, these are the stingers
http://www.streetbikersden.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=1778

I think I'll just look up what size I am at the store, then see if I can find them on ebay cheaper sometime.

Oh shoot those are not even that expensive.

I get worried about saftey gear, not that I am cheap, but I don't like paying extra for a name...

If a company called dick head came out and made helmets that were as good as arai or shoei i'd be there in a hear beat. I would sport the dick head helmet, as long as I didn't have to pay for the arai or shoei name.

...would you want to have 'dick head' stamped across the front of your helmet?

If it was high quality and affordable, yeah, I would.

Seriously again, I value my dome, but I have an issue with paying $500+ for a decent helmet, when really you are paying for a name.

There are neat parallels between this and the 'biker look' thread.  I like my helmet, and though I play with the idea of a 3/4 or half lid, I think I'll stick with a modular.  I might consider other HJC helmets, though, or maybe the Arai Oak mentioned 'next time around'.  My head is so small even XS helmets move around a bit... :P
