I would start at the ends, check with a test light and move up the line from there, hopefully its not in the birdnest hiding behind the headlight. If so it will just lake longer. mechanic= process of elimation. ;D

1st question:  What bike, and what year?

2nd question:  Are you talking about the running lights (the ones that are on anytime the headlight is on) or are you saying the brake light does not light up when you apply the brake, and the rear turn signals do not blink when you move the turn signal switch to the left or right?

I'm having that problem right now too on my K3. I'm thinking I am gonna have to bust open the LH switch and clean up and re-solder my bullet connectors. Probably will have to do the same to the rats-nest in the headshell and the connections under the seat.

The rear amber lights are turn signals only.  They do not shine steady as the front amber lights do.  Brake light wire is usually brown.  You can check the Electrics FAQ for a general wire color chart.

Also, don't forget to check the bulbs for fried filaments!

Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

That's why I asked if he was talking about the running lights.  It's not uncommon around here for people to expect the rear turn signals to light up at all times like the front signals do, whenever the headlight is turned on, even though they're not supposed to.

You still didn't say what bike and what year.  If it's an earlier model with the headlight on/off switch, are you checking the running light with the headlight on or off?  It should only be on when the headlight is on.  If it's not on when the headlight is on, then it may just be that the filament burnt out for the running light and you need a new bulb.

+1 with Old School...ignition on=brown wire hot. It supplies the tail-light if it's 5A fuse in the fuse box is O.K. A previous post had the fuse as good, but no light due to corrosion ( slight ) of the fuse holder.( clip at each end of the fuse ) ..must be good and shiny for connection..shine the 3 fuse holders while your at it.Hope that's a cure.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

My 78K was like that when I got it also, and I tried everything logical and everything logical didn't work, so I ran fresh wires for all the rear lights and all was well. The brown/white that feeds it should poke out of the harness just at the back of the battery box on the drive side. Check the fuse, clean the contacts on the fuse box, clean the bullet connectors along the way, and even use some silicon dielectric grease on all connectors and the lamp base. Insure that the connections in the headlight bucket are all good, it seems like the running/plate light is tapped in where the brake light should be (brown? double check...)

Did you replace the stock bulbs (1073 rear and 1034 front) with 1156 and 1157?

While the later bulbs have the same physical size, the wattage draw is different, and the stock flasher unit was matched to the stock bulb wattage.

I've not used 2057, but I wouldn't expect that would be a problem for a brake light bulb.
But, for turn sigs, either change the bulbs back to stock type, or get an electronic flasher at the auto parts store that is not load sensitive.
