Master cylinder 1975 750F?
« on: March 13, 2009, 03:26:42 PM »
I am going to buy a 1975 750F tomorrow and I already know that the master cylinder leaks. I want to get ahead of the game and get a master cylinder lined up for replacement so I can take it for a ride.... and stop. I read some old posts and saw this one for sale on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FRONT-BRAKE-MASTER-CYLINDER-CB750A-CB750K-CB750F-CMX250_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a570Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem110361915337QQitemZ110361915337QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Just curious about something else. Is it worth getting better front brakes to start out with? I know they are drum, is it worth replacing them with disc? I am not really worried about aesthetics of vintage brakes. I would rather have a better braking bike than a bike with original brakes. If I made the swap I would need a new master cylinder anyways right? I'm thinking I might as well do it all at once and save some time and cash. Your thoughts?

Um, a '75 750F has discs front and back....unless someone has glued a drum brake to the front of it...

If it's a true 75F, then it should already have a disc rear. Otherwise, that rear drum is plenty strong enough where it's not really necessary to swap to disc.....

the 1975's have one drum on the rear, but thanks for the input. If it has good stopping power with drums that is good enough for me. I split lanes commuting to Los Angeles so brakes are very important to me.

The "K" bikes have the drum, where the "F" bikes have a disc...my bike below is a '75 750F, with stock rear brakes...

If you do get a 75 750F you will soon find that the rear disc will lock up your wheel in a heartbeat. Probably TOO good. It's probably that reason Honda switched from our double piston caliper to a single piston on 77/78. Play with it a little before you have to make a panic stop.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I was kinda curious about that same MC.  I didn't get around to checking, but will it clear the right side controls?  It looks like the reservoir is awfully close to the bars.

It says that that MC is for a double caliper set-up like the 77-78.  Would it be to powerful for the single caliper 75-76 and make it too sensitive?  There is a thread about this somewhere here.
