COMPLETE BIKE Stainless Fastener Kits from Inox ??
« on: February 14, 2009, 05:47:56 PM »
Wow, isn't the search function fantastic (if you use it)?! I've been trying to locate a single source to find stainless replacements for EVERY, yes EVERY, fastener on my bike. If I'm going to do it, it's going to be done 100%. Internet search was pretty futile. Yes, I found some but nowhere near what I wanted. It's all or none for me. Anal tendencies I guess.

Has anyone ordered from Inox from England? Full complete whole bike sets or partial system sets such as engine? Experiences, quality, etc if so.

Talking about a finishing touch!! YES!

I've bought quite a few bits & pieces off him.  Pay a little extra for electropolished - looks almost like a chromed part.  John is a good guy & his products are great.

I spent a good chunk of change on stainless fasteners from INOX.  I pretty much bought a complete kit (except the long engine mount hardware) for my 78K project, but I swapped out some parts to work with the GL front end and used button heads for the engine covers.  The service was good and for the most part, the pieces were top notch.  One caution with the electropolishing; in spite of what they may say, it does remove material making the fit of bolts just a bit sloppier and it is particularly noticeable on the fit of hex (allen) keys in socket and button head bolts.  The electropolished button heads will round out before proper torque is achieved on the engine covers. For standard hex head bolts the electropolishing looks great and had no ill effects. Stainless is relatively easy and enjoyable to polish if you have the time and equip.

I've had a lot of stainless off Inox - good quality and good price imho. They're also used a lot by the restoration boys in Classic Mechanics Magazine so a good endorsement...

Dont know if you tried, but a lot closer to home..

Not sure if they have Honda 750 kits. I sure liked their chrome fastener kits, with choice of Knul on, knurl of & i think tapered.

Myself, I prefer the chrome over stainless, less galling & sticking..

Just my suggestion here.......

On my last 450 project, I just went through the fiche and made a list of every nut/bolt/screw on the bike.
Then I went to Bolt Depot and ordered the list in stainless.
Cost a bit under $100 for everything on the bike, including engine mounting bolts.
I ordered hundred-packs in several cases, like 6mm washers/nuts, stuff like that, still have plenty left for other bikes.
Also got to choose the button-head type allens, which have a look I liked better than the Franken-bike allens you normally see.

Don't know how that cost compares to pre-made kits, but.......

IMHO stainless are good for most of the bolts on a bike, but not all.
Engine mount bolts, shock lower bolts and most of the fork bolts should in my opinion be done in grade 8 or better. My engine mounts are all grade 8 and my suspension stuff is all grade 10. I got my engine bolts from ebay (forget who... ) and all the graded stuff from a great local family owned hardware store (JE
Rice) I try to give as much business as I can.

tbpmusic,

Boltdepot.com is one of the places I looked. Fastenal, etc. Seems we have many bolts that are sized between say 25 or 30mm ie 28mm. Odd shapes too. Most of the places I looked did not have these odd sizes. Multiples of 5mm only once they get to, say, 25mm. AND, my Honda parts catalogue has 94 pages. Been through the whole thing with a fine tooth comb. and/plus I will soon be submitting complete seals list, bearings list, gaskets list, and O Rings list to the site to be done with that ardous task once and for all. Gotta help all the guys out if I'm helping myself. Plus Inox has smoothed &/or polished. That is very tempting. Yes I could do it all myself but I can pay to have it done cheaper than I can do it myself.

eurban,

The double polishing is VERY tempting. Now I have to decide if I want that one little bolt hidden under the doohickey that is impossible to see that shiny.

78CB750CAFE,

I agree on the mount bolts! BUT, where the hell can I find new grade 8 or better without all the markings!?

Toxic,

No, doesn't appear so. Don't I wish!

Frank,

I'll check but NOWHERE have I found such an extensive listing! Mostly kits like Jim Spillane sells for very specific units, not the whole organism. Thats a #$%*pot full of work done especially if they have everything!

Thanks guys, keep the info coming!

Jerry

For Honda I use Burk's Bolts (http://www.westcoastmc.com/store/). They sell bolts sets for many vintage makes and models. If you want EVERY single bolt you will need to work the parts manual and make a list.
