Finding new project bikes
« on: October 11, 2005, 07:30:13 PM »
Winter's on it's way in this part of the world, and I'm thinking of getting a new project bike. For the group, what are some effective ways of locating suitable candidates? I'm looking for something mostly complete and not needing an engine or transmission transplant.

I just run an ad in my local paper. "Wanted Dead or Alive" your old motorcycle. I make it up like a wanted poster. You would be surprised as to what comes out of the woodwork. Just tonight I went to look at a bunch of bikes tha varied in sizes from 80cc-750cc, NOS parts for Honda and Bridgesgtone. It works out to about 15 bikes. Not anything I want to ride but it is an income for my HABIT.

Bowhunter, let us know what sort of feedback you get from your ad.

Knowing what you have found is the key.  Get a collectors guide or the "classic Japanese Motorcycles" buyers guide then run the add.  The only two bikes I have invested in so far are my sandcast resto project and a black bomber that I parted out and mad well over two grand on.  the "Old Cars" price guide for vintage motorcycles won't come out again till the end of the 06 first quarter so start with the first one I meantioned.  It will make the difference between you getting chump change for the parts or finding a real collector bike to part out or restore.  I have never run an add but I intend on doing it this spring and I know I'll dig up a collector bike.  Not just some money pit project.
