Where's a good place to get spoke kits?
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:20:40 PM »
I'm in the process of redoing my wheels. Rims where cleaned and powdercoated and the hubs will be going to the shop shortly as well. Now, I need to get some spoke kits. I know Buchanan's sells them, but they're about a $100 a kit.

I'm looking at my options. Where do you guys get your spokes from?

I looked on ebay and found this seller. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Front-Wheel-Spoke-Kit-Honda-CB500-CB500T-CB550-CB750-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem35aa235ff6QQitemZ230487711734QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_692wt_941

Anybody ever buy from him?

You can also try these guys.  $29. I'll be ordering a front and rear set soon.

Hey, noticed you are in NJ.  Where abouts (What exit, lol)?  I'm in Bergen County.  Did you use someone local for the powder coating?  Recommend them?  Price?  Pm with the details if you don't want to post it all.

That is pretty inexpensive for spokes.

But I worry about the quality of the spokes. Is there a really a difference between a kit that costs $90 something and one that costs $29?

And how much of a difference are we talking?

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I just cleaned up the original spokes for a build I'm doing.  I used the red "metal" scrub pad you can find at auto stores and Ace Hardware locations.  Use a little WD-40, PB Blaster, or the like, and sand them down.  It goes quickly, and you will be surprised at the beautiful finish you get.  I'm not sure if they will hold up to weather and salt after this, but the spokes are at least ready for powder coat (clear, black, grey, etc), and you know you have the quality of original spokes.

The ones I had were pretty rusty, so I actually just cut them off when I pulled the wheels. So cleaning them's not really an option.

I got spokes from these guys and they were great quality and exactly what I needed, and they were a custom size too.
All glory to the hypno-toad.
