painting carbs, what paint to use? gas safe
« on: February 17, 2009, 12:07:06 AM »
I want to paint my carb bodies black to match the motor when I reassemble my 350 motor. I read from a google search of "painting carbs" that some people have used brake caliper paint with success. I was wondering if there are any other ideas. Would the high temp paint for the engine suffice? or is there another option?

I use polyurethane paint extensively at the shop. It has tremendous chemical resistance and should not have any problems with it @ 250F.

Just me -  but I think I would keep the paint off the carbs. If you ever wanted to do an aggressive dip cleaning, not that any old Honda has ever needed it  :D it will probably strip paint and make quite a mess.Polished metal, and carbs can get quite bright make a nice statement and would be easier to maintain.

not sure how chemical resistant hight temp paint may be but if you have some handy just try to wash it off with some gas.

The reason why i mentioned poly paints is because in most cases they are rated not to fail the MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) test; Apply MEK to a rag and wipe 100 times over the painted surface. Should have no loss of gloss or color. It the paint can take MEK gasoline won't stand a chance.

Unfortunately you really need some equipment to be able to use this stuff so you may be somewhat limited in you selection of material.

I'd love to help but somehow I doubt we are anywhere close to each other.

it think im just gonna go with the hightemp engine paint after the proper cleaning is done. I dont mind dealing with the paint if ever i need to dip it again. I just dont see me needing to dip it for a while as it will be ridden everyday and rarely have a chance for the carbs to build up crap. and when they do ill just deal with the paint coming off.

There is no reason why your stuff shouldn't last just as long or look as good after all it's mostly prep and patience and they have never been able to package either in a can!

I wouldn't think that paint on carbs would be someting I would like in the long run.  If they start to look crappy after a few months, you have to strip and re-do everything.  I just polish up the outside carbs that are visible (#1 and #4).  When they start to look a little drab, I just spray 'em down with the Valvoline carb cleaner, get out the metal polish and the Dremel with the felt tips for the tight areas.  Nice and shiney again.  ;D

ekpent... the bike will hopefully be done sometime end of this month beginning of the next and it will be ridden just about every day of the year. may sit a day here or a day there. but its year round riding down here. It gets cold to make a ride miserable but if you wear the right things its livable.

steve, I get what your saying. I would probably polish them but im down here for school and without my bench buffer. so painting it will be.

I don't use a bench buffer....I don't even take them off the bike.  Just polish in place.

I think I'm going to paint them. if they do come out looking like crap i'll bead blast them again. Which kind of rattle can paint would be the best? the VHT engine paint, brake caliper paint, or something else?
