My bike was a project/found bike, so I wasn't very excited about spending many $$ on tires that might end up being on a frame destined for the junk heap...again. Cheng shin carries the cheapest tires I was able to find, after going through all of the threads on tires and looking at the FAQ's (which I would recommend you do as well). I put around 2000 miles on these tires this summer, with no complaints thus far. I plan to switch to a better grade of tire this winter, but can't gripe about these at all. I've been told that the primary diference is compostion and wear.

hope this helps,

hym

Thanks and How can I determine the largest tire I can run on the back of the bike? do you think that the tire place would know this?
Also how much should I expect to spend on the tires as a good deal?....thanks for the reply...Daniel

There's a thread on this for the 750.

The 500/550 will take a 120/90 although 100/90 is the norm - that corresponds to the 4.25/85 that we used to fit.

I wouldn't expect any tire place to have a clue about these old bikes - unless they just happen to have an enthusiast on the staff.

Take a look at the "Tire Gallery" for some ideas.

120 seems to be as big as anyone goes on a 550.  many (most?) go smaller.  personal preference, i guess.  i saw someone complain about rub with a 120 once, but that was an exception, and i wonder if there's some variance per brand (topic creep).  i've been happy with my bridgestone spitfires in 120 rear, 100 front.  that's another decent CBT (Cheap Bastard Tire) that doesn't have the stigma Cheng Shins seem to (more thread creep)....

he said rubber.

As I stated in the tire gallery forum, I've been pleasantly surprised (so far, only had the tires one summer) with the Kenda Challenger and Cruiser S/T tires. I've had problems with a Cheng Shin being out-of-round, but I have also had Cheng Shin tires that were OK. I've found www.onoffroad.com (among many others) has decent prices and a wide selection. Take a peek at them.
