Help ID Non-stock Master Cyl on my 400F. Need to order a Lever
« on: February 16, 2009, 09:24:02 AM »
I kinda like ABC's "Life on Mars" series, but the film crew sucks. When filming on my block they somehow knocked my bike down off the curb and into the gutter, busting my brake lever.

I know my Master Cylinder isn't stock and I don't know what it's from, so I'm not sure which lever to order. Don't really want to take it to one of the theiving NYC shops, so can someone help me ID which lever to buy?

my first question...  why were they filming "life on mars" in NYC ???

secondly, i can't answer your real question but just take the lever off and go to a shop to see if they have a match.  if you don't like the price... then, also, get the satisfaction of walking back out of the store w/ your free info.  if the price is ok... maybe you'll change your mind about the stealerships.  sometimes, in a pinch, they serve a purpose... like to go get levers for a bit more but immediately.   ;)

p.s.  looks like a common lever i've had on many bikes.

Hah. Life on Mars is a cop show. Modern day NYC cop gets into a horrible accident and wakes up as a NYC cop in the village in 1973. Life on Mars is the Bowie song that was playing on the radio when he got into the accident. Worth a watch. Harvey Keitel makes a fantastic 1970's precinct chief.

Yeah -- I may have to take it off and drag it up to the shop in Hell's Kitchen. The retards there probably won't be able to match it, but if they let me back to the lever shelves, I should be able to find one.

Get them to pay for a new master cylinder complete, an original one to match rest of bike. Did they also cause the damage to the gas tank? Remember to get present day prices not 70's ones.  ;D

It was of course originally made by the BBC in the UK and then sold to ABC.

The tank didn't get any dents that weren't already there when it was knocked, and nothing else was hurt. I chewed out the set manager, who was really nice and apologetic, but to date has never returned my calls. I asked some of the seemingly millions of teamsters sitting around if they saw what happened but they just kind of grunted and went back to their cigarettes. I don't want revenge or repayment at this point, just a new lever. The temps are in the low 40's and no ice left, so I want to do some riding.

Looks similar to my 88 Hawk GT  It has the mirror mount.  I used a 92 VFR brake lever that was adjutable.  I could use the full range of adjustments, but it did work well

Thanks all. At least I'll have the Nighthawk as a reference point to start the guy looking. Didn't make it to the shop today, but I'll probably run by tomorrow.

By the way, I rode all over the city today using just the stub for a front brake. First ride in quite a while -- it was still bit cold but very very nice.

Not as good as Philip Glenister I'll bet!

What do they use for wheels in the US version?

Cant quite hack Glenister with a Yank accent in Demons----Very offputing

It's a Chevelle in the U.S. version.

In all other instances, I agree that the original BBC shows are way better than the knock-off American versions, but not this time.  There's just something that this version has that the original is lacking.  But hey, you guys still get the credit for dreaming it up! ;D
Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperioli really make the show.

I like the US version of the 'Office' almost as much as the UK one, perhaps because Ricky Gervais kept a tight hold on it.

As mentioned, no problem with the show. In fact it's really pretty good (the star is flavorless but Keitel and Imperioli are great). But the pricks who film it busted my mirror and brake lever. Still haven't gotten to the store to look for a new one -- rode just fine with the stump on Saturday. Now it's cold and snowing again, and the bike is back in the backyard.

Are they still there filming? If they are stick around and make a royal pain in the ass of yourself all the while suggesting that a certain amount of $ will make you go away and shut up. There are often people on location whose job it is to placate the locals with cash and you have every right to be placated. If they aren't shooting anymore then you need to contact the production office and speak to either a production coordinator or the construction coordinator. If you don't get any satisfaction contact me by pm and I'll see if I can find out who to talk to....Yeah, I'm in the "Industry".  ;)

I talked to a friend today about this. He's in the production end of things, has been doing it for a while so he's seen a lot of similar situations. He also rides. His advice is to file a police report asap regarding damage to personal property or vandalism. Most likely the production company will yes you and promise you, if they talk to you at all, until they or you go away. Find out who the producer is and let them know that you are filing a police report...better yet if you know a lawyer have them do the contact. You have to push them and let them know you mean business or they will treat you like the nuisance they believe you to be. Insist that the repair be done by a Honda dealer. Insist on everything. Seems like a lot of trouble but they callously damaged your bike. A bike they had no right to touch. They owe you.
