cb550 electric starter
« on: February 20, 2009, 07:09:00 PM »
My bike sat for a week or 2 and the starter wont turn the engine over any more. I took side cover off and checked to see if it was spinning and it was spinning ( I pulled it out so i could see it). When i put in back in it just makes a buzzing noise but wont turn the engine over. Any thoughts about what might be wrong would be appreciated. At least the kick start works :) My bike is a 74 cb550

Betcha the battery is just down..go ahead and kick-start the bike and ride around for 1/2 hour and I bet it will be' back on the button' start...or charge it overnight @ 2amps ( no more or it will 'fry' the battery and drastically shorten it's life ). Starter will spin even with a half-dead battery when its free of having to turn-over the motor. Still no button start?, it might be new battery time !!
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

You can also have the battery tested.  I would guess Batteries Plus would test it for you.  I was just in there yesterday (Batteries Plus that is) pricing out batteries for my bike and they priced out from about 60 dollars to 160 dollars.  The expensive one of course was a solid state that could start a Diesel Engine!

My thoughts exactly.  Kinda when you got that R/C car for Christmas, and ran the bejeezus out of it until it wouldn't move anymore.  But when you picked it up and flipped it over, the wheels would turn just fine.  Battery just doesn't have enough juice.

Ill take a trip over to batteries plus see what they have. Battery is less than 6 months old, that will teach me to leave the key on for a week. :P

So wait, you left the ignition on for a week, and then you're curious as to why the starter won't turn? ??? ;D
