Newbie Mistake Changing Plugs
« on: February 20, 2009, 09:12:57 PM »
A few kind people were helping me with my initial problem

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=46726.0

so I changed my spark plugs.  The thing is, I made a newbie mistake by taking them all out instead of one at a time.  I think I got my leads crossed or mixed up because when I tried to start it, I got a loud pop!

Can anyone out there tell me which leads go to which plugs?

The leads came numbered (decals on each near the boot).  Do any of yours still have number decals on them?

I've got a '75 CB550 next to me in the shop.  I'm assuming that the coil to plug wires run the same on your model, but am not certain of that.  Here's the way it lays out.

While seated on the bike in riding position, the outermost lead (furthest from the frame) of the left coil goes to cylinder #2.  The innermost lead (closest to the frame) of the left coil goes to plug #3.  Switching to the right coil, the innermost lead (closest to the frame) goes to the #1 cylinder.  The outermost lead (furtherest from the frame) goes to the #4 cylinder.

In case you're unsure of the cylinder arrangement, again, while seated on the bike, they run in order from the leftmost cylinder (#1) to the rightmost cylinder (#4).

That may not be the problem.  Honda uses a lost spark ignition meaning 1-4 spark together and 2-3 spark together every time around.  Combine that with the length of the leads being unable to reach the wrong plugs and the problem may lie elsewhere.  Short leads inside (2-3), long leads outside (1-4).  keep us posted.

Bill,

Followed your instructions and it fired up first kick.   Thanks!
