Sheared off sparkplug/corrosion?
« on: January 12, 2009, 02:34:04 PM »

The far left sparkplug on my cb750 sheared off leaving the base and electrode inside the engine trying to remove it at the weekend, any suggestions on removal?! The head of the plug is retained within the socket so can't be loosened.
Assumedly this was due to corrosion though I've never had this occur before.

I hope someone has a good trick otherwise this might require the removal of the head. You may be able to get a large ez-out that will go in and grip the sides. may allow you to get it out. Maybe carefully add some heat with a torch and see if that helps.

Soak it at least overnight with penetrating lube and then heat it up really well.  A large extractor will be needed.  You can also weld a bar to it and use that for leverage if you can get the nose of your MIG in there.  Lots, of heat, and prayer.  You are lucky it is #1, the inside ones are head off, no questions asked due to access.

do you have any mechanic friends that work on a lot of late model ford trucks? there is a tool made by lisle tools, (though it is sold by NAPA also), that is used to remove broken spark plugs from the late model, 3 valve, triton motors with the long threads. the ford factory plugs in these motors are notorious for breaking. it wouldn't be worth buying the tool just for this, but if you can borrow it i think it might be just the ticket. just a thought.

Hey Cheeseybeans, have you had any time to work on it?  I'm curious to hear if you've had any success.

I wish you the very best of luck.

Hi, I've soaked it for a while in some oil, seems like the inner bit of the plug has broken up as I can hear gas pass it when the engine's turned over. Haven't tried to do anything with it to date, hoping to get out there tomorrow.
I'm considering taking the engine out anyway as one of the tappet screws has disappeared...
Is it impossible to change the camchain on a k7 without removing the engine first? Seems odd to me but doesn't seem enough clearance to get the cover out with engine in frame.

+ 1 on the tool for removing spark plug "remains" on the Tritons(what a POS motor!!). Be sure and follow Ford's specific instructions.
You will have to pull motor to access upper end of engine unless you get one of Gordon's (Ilbikes) frame kits. I wouldn't be too keen on using heat for fear of using too much.Get a hold of the tool and PB blaster.

Them is fightin words..... I happen to own an 08 F-150 with one of those POS motors and happen to love it dearly.

+2 on that tool though. 04-06 5.4L 3v motors had the problem. new head design and plug design i believe fixed the problem in 07-08. ive seen the tool made out of threade bar stock and some nuts as well.

I haven't tore into one yet either but they are a nightmare to change plugs on. I have seen 3 or 4 (at different shops) come in with plugs blown out of the head. When that happens....it usually breaks the tab off of the coil-over above it.I find it usually on the #3 cyl.(passenger side of vehicle towards firewall (totally sh!tty access). I imagine it is due to someone stripping the threads trying to get it back in. I can tell you I had a rich f&#k come into our shop with a totally clean 68' Stang fastback with a beautiful paint job for an A/C charge. He had the 5.4 stuffed in there....obviously an expensive transformation. Of course the 3 of us at the shop had to go out and take a spin in it.It really wasn't that impressive compared to earlier carbed motors.

true... but the room for improvement is there just like the old carb motors. i personally like the simplicity of working on pushrob carb motors... but being able to gain 20 HP and around 15TQ with just a programmer is appealling. I am starting to plan the build of my 5.4 when all is said and done. (forged bottom end, Gen 3 Whipple supercharger @ 15psi, worked heads, supprorting fuel mods. built tranny from bowler, etc...) should come in at around 550RWHP and 600RWTQ.

wow i really hijacked this thread... my bad.
