AGM Battery for CB750K
« on: February 20, 2009, 02:45:43 PM »
Hi, does anyone have a recent pointer to a source for a "drop-in" AGM battery for a 750K?  I've done a search but many of the places referred to in older threads no longer are selling such a battery.  On Yuasa's site, a YTX14AHL-BS is listed as an AGM that fits, but few vendors sell it and the price is pretty high.  I'm thinking there must be a non-Yuasa AGM that is a lot cheaper, although perhaps not.  My bike is a 71 K1, but except for the Hondamatic, I think they're all the same from 69 to 82.

I really want to get away from wet batteries as I often let my bike sit for a week or three and while I try to put a charger on it, I sometimes forget.  My experience is that the self-discharge rate on AGM's is MUCH better than wet batteries.

Thanks,

- Mark

P.S.  A little more investigation and I see a vendor called Power-Sonic which makes the PTX14AHLBS-FS as applicable which appears to be 1/16" wider and 3/16" shorter which I bet would fit fine.  An Ebay vendor is selling it for $48+shipping.  Anyone try this one?

battery's plus has them around $69 for our bikes 12n size 15 amp hours.
they had a $5 or so coupon online last week for in store purchases, check the website to see if there is 1 near you.

Got mine from batteries plus for about 60. I got it on a spring sale which should be coming up I would think. Drops right in no problem.

Those are some good prices on those.  I paid $105 shipped for my VR (with a metal jacket) - brand is Odyssey PC680MJ (sadly not for a 750) .  The thing is awesome.  More than worth that price in my mind, 'specially the way I was going though wet batteries.  I might run my VR once every 4 months lately, never put a trickle charger (not getting into a debate of this, lol) and it has had no sign of weakness.  I have had it two years now, expectancy it 8+, from what I have read.

Glad this thread popped up, prolly will get one for the K5.  Now to find or make 4 gauge cables (my choice).

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

sweet prices.  I might have to get me one of these.  Digging through my rubbermaid tub of bike parts I found my old battery.  I didn't think I still had it.  Good thing it's been in there a while, otherwise it might have leaked nastiness all over, which will lead me into a slightly OT question, afterwhich will revert right back on track.

slightly OT Q: So these sealed AGMs can be mounted on their sides or whichever way you desire (like a gel in that regard)?

Back on track:  I'm assuming the connections (read 'Terminals') on pretty much all of the AGMs will be the same...

The guys at Batteries Plus tell me they can be mounted any which way and I've read it on this forum.  I've not done it.

If you are referring to their position, I'm not sure that is a safe assumption. Always check to make sure the position matches up to your needs.

I guess I was referring more to the type of terminal/connection they have.  I've found a few batt's that have a spade plug (male) versus the chunk-o-lead type of terminal/stud, but you make a good point too. :)
