stupid prices for "priceless vintage parts"
« on: February 21, 2009, 04:51:10 PM »
my recent malarchy at a junkyard and a craigslist posting
conversation is as follows for both occasions,

"how much for thhis tach?"
-"oh that? thats a vintage honda part,......50 bucks."
"no i dont want the whole bike, just the tach."
-"thats 50$"
"oh, ok thanks but no thanks"

what is going on here?????????  am i wrong for thinking a used honda tach is worth 15 bucks or less?  it seems that everyone charges waaaaaaay to much for this stuff.  is the popularity of these old sohc bikes out of hand now????? it seems that people that dont even care for these bikes and sell em' have all got the same idea that this stuff is up there with 60's and 70's triumph/ducati ferrari (and any other unobtanium parts).
geeze.

these are not rare bike, thats why i got into hondas-they made a ton of them

As they say, the devil is in the details. What year, model and what was the condition? Fifty could be a steal under the right conditions.

the condition i say was fair, these two bikes were sitting outside for many years,
79 cb650's.  no condensation behind the glass and no rust on the chrome plates. no overall damage but the sun did cause damage.

i know that the guy at the salvage yard nearest me sized me up the first time i went in there and tried to take me for all he could. he was pretty surprised when i walked out without buying.
his justification was the he could sell the part on ebay a hundred bucks
i said this isn't ebay is it and walked away

the prices are stupid unless your the one selling it

i hate it when you see one by or in someones barn and you can tell it hasn't been touched or even thought about in many years. you ask about it and all of a sudden its a rare, vintage Honda.
10 or 12 years ago you could get a decent 70's CB here in Michigan for 300 to 600 bucks. no such luck these days

I think the last tack I sold was 25 shipping included.  FYI the 79 tack is a little diff than the other 650's.  Face is numbered and rotated diff.

I personally see no value in 650 stuff.  I would pay $50 for 750 stuff, which is what I am into.  The fact is I can make more than $50 every day, but I will not be able to produce CB750 tach every day.

I try to sell high when I am uloading parts, but also expect to pay good money when there is something I need.  That is my perspective.

For your enjoyment, here's a conversation I had recently with a CL lister for 550 carbs & re-build kits (he had several of each and asked for offers...) So I made him an offer and here was the rest of the exchange:

(him): "ya i bet you will just like the hundred other bogus offers out there??"

(me): "So I'll take that as a no? Just exactly how much do you think broken 30+year old carbs are worth these days?? Good luck with your very valuable, completely obsolete motorcycle parts."

(him): "you better try finding some there going for 150.00"

He was back 5 days later posting the same garbage...

You can find whole bikes for 150$, if you're patient.

But the honest truth is... We create the market for these guys. Some people just don't care about 100$, and it doesn't put a dent on anything. Unfortunately, I'm cheap.

Why would he give them to you for $15 when he can sell them to someone else for $50. Is this a friend? NO

On the other hand I was recently at the Denver Show and Swap Meet. You wouldn't believe all the unidentifyable old parts scattered over acres. These guys must have been packing the same parts for years! No takers either. Imagine that. I'd guess thats just pride and their whole lives they won't give up. My thoughts were there had to be a scrap metal dealer close by that would love to buy by the pound. Way of life, bottom line.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I don't mind paying for what I need, but it does make me a little angry when people buy stuff up and break in down in a manner that makes it hard to get what you need. If I am going to buy a used head for example I want the whole Assembly not the valve train, the head and the valves in separate piles.

I only wish that sellers of parts, would include the nuts and bolts that are used to mount the parts on the bike as well in the sale. Some of these can be much harder to find then the part itself. I often wonder what they end up doing with them? Toss them, what a waste.

True, but thankfully the '80-'82 tach reads right on a '79, and vice versa.

Yep gotta agree with all said here, before Ebay/CL/Trademe some neighbour would lean over the fence and ask you if you wanted the old bike he was going to dump.
I have been given heaps of bikes over the years, I turned down a 6 cylinder Benelli in mint condition because I didn't have room for it in my shed...yes that was a "free" bike from a work mate...duh kick kick kick myself.
On Trademe last year some guy had a 1965 Yamaha 90 that had lived under a tree most of its life and nothing had been done to protect it at all, starting price was $900!  :o
Now I'm the kinda guy that given a bolt from a bike will hunt around until I find all the other bits to complete it, but that thing needed to be scraped!!!
The world has been made much smaller by the internet and we all benefit from its advantages but we all suffer from the fact that now the cheap stuff is advertised much farther and obtains better prices.
I shouldn't talk, I had to get my CB650 pipes from Texas USA!
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I just got outbid on the K2 750 speedo I need.  I went $50 and was outbid.  I would pay more, but I need to find one in better condition, if there are any.  Don't know why they seem to have faces that crack, when later ones seem to stay looking good.

I hear you all.  I see craiglist postings here in Seattle where people want $3000 for a 75-78 CB550 or CB750, and these are not mint bikes.  The prices seem insane, but I've got to think people are getting it.  SOHCs are very hip here.  On a positive note, I did pick up a set of PD carbs, in very good shape (no rebuid required) for my '77 CB550 on ebay, and was the only bidder - $35.  Every other time I have bid on these late model carbs, they get bid up to $100+.

there are not a lot of used bike parts places here in colorado springs. there is one but, I don't want to give them any free publicity, since I have not done business with them, yet. I have noticed that there are a bunch of people who own "vintage" vehicles, motorcycles and otherwise who have outrageous prices for their items. It is no wonder that this stuff is still sitting there, for sale. People want to be on the good end of a sale, no one wants to get ripped-off. However, these vintage parts/vehicle owners would rather let their stuff rust away and depreciate even more, than allow a potential sale to someone who would actually get some use out of the item.
