cb550 idle
« on: February 22, 2009, 07:36:07 PM »
Hi I have a 1975 Honda CB550f. I had to replace the cylinder head cover this winter and just got it running. The motor seems to idle just fine around 1100 and Revs up fast but it dose not want to run around 2000rpm and will stay at higher rpm (about 3000) after it is reved up most times until you adjust the idle screw. I put new plugs in it and cleaned the carbs to the best of my ability but I did not sync them with the fancy tool some people have (due to the fact I dont have one or know its correct namefor it). Do i just need to take it some where to have it synced or is there another problem? This is my first real bike and am not sure what to do? ???

Thanks, Nate

Did you remove and disassemble the carbs for cleaning?  I'm just trying to understand what you did with them to better help identify the problem.  For what it's worth, carb syncing should be the LAST thing you do after you make all of your other maintenance adjustments (valves, ignition, cam chain tension, etc.).

Regarding sync gauges, you really couldn't find a better time to buy them.  Morgan (UK company) makes a very good set and the favorable exchange rate makes the price a deal.

If you don't have vacuum leaks between the carbs and head, then sync the carbs.  They are probably arguing amongst themselves at what RPM the engine should be.

Search here more about carb cleaning. It took me three times the first time but was so worth it. After cleaning search bench sync and youll be in buisness. The carb sync tool is last. Where are you? You might have a member here next door! Not me tho since Ive blocked out winter memories.  I think you need to back up and try to clean them again or state that youve searched extensively on how to take them off and clean them and have done so. (first the powder then the wadding then the shot) to quote Sylvester the cat.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Don't pay somebody else to synch your carbs.  It will very likely not be done correctly, and will cost you much more than just buying the tool yourself.
