CB350 Twin project returns (lots of pics)
« on: February 22, 2009, 06:03:20 PM »
OK.  So after almost a year of neglect in the garage (lost my gumption after the wreck last spring) I finally started working on the 350 again.  The freshly bored jugs got back (.25 over) and the engine is back together and in the frame.  I also laced one rim (don't mind the brake hub not being painted yet) and started truing it but I'm not good at it so time to get some research done and sharpen my skills.

Brief history (for those that care).
I had a project that ended on a sour note last year and jumped into the next one I could find.  It was a 71 CB 350 twin without a title and lots of problems but cheap(just that way I like them).  Mark (Dusterdude) was very kind and donated another bike that had a title and I started pulling them apart and deciding on the best parts from each bike to use for the rebuild.  Here are the pics of the progress so far.

First bike

Frame issues with first bike

Disassembly

Engines

Pre paint

Much better

Working with both of those motors, you might as well bought a CB!  You still have four cylinders and now Two Transmissions!  But it's looking Great!  :D
I didn't see what type of paint you are using, do you mind sharing?  It looks very sharp!

Is that the CB350K4 model with the hinged centre frame for easy parking?
Any way very nice what you have done so far with such a sad begining.
I remember these bikes well, not fast but damn reliable and acceptable to ride with the faster two stroke brigade.
My only issue with them (we had 3 in the family) was that massive vibration from the foot pegs, all our 350's did it and at any speed you could hardly keep your feet on the pegs for the vibration.
Loved the 360 though and rebuilt two of those from wrecks.....good luck with your rebuild.

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

All POR-15 so far (except for the nipples).  Using Duplicolor for the tank and all red accents.  The POR-15 is kinda expensive but worth it.  The frame paint self levels and the engine paint just plain looks great.  All are chemical and chip resistant.  I dropped a pair of vice grips on the frame and it didn't even nick it.

How did you paint the frame? With a brush? And what about all the silver parts?

Frame with a brush applied fairly thick.  Sprayed 3 coats of POR-15 (Aluminum) on all the engine, spokes, and a few more to come when the weather warms up.  picked up the sprayer for about $50 at the local tractor supply store and just use my little 2 gallon air compressor.  Works great for my small projects.

I looks really nice.

Did you paint the rims with a brush as well?

Thanks.  Yep.  I used a bold through the valve stem hole to hang them and brushed the frame paint on.  It self levels really well.

I'm going to paint my CB500 frame and rims within the next couple of weeks and I may go for the same paint as you did.

What did you use for primer? And how many coats of black did you use on the rims and frame?

Nice looking build!  I would love to build a 350 twin for my next project, so I will definitely be following your thread!

No need for primer if you prep correctly and use the POR-15 frame paint.  It's UV sensitive so I use a coat of POR-15 Blackcoat on top of that.  Don't really need more than that but I guess you could thin it out and put 2 coats of the Blackcoat on.  It's thick so I wouldn't go for 2 coats without thinning it a little.

Good luck.

Looks like I'm going to be selling this bike and thought I'd post here first.  I'll be getting a couple of recent pics this weekend.  The carbs still aren't perfect but I've got the jets that need to go in and they are included.  Between having a couple broken fingers (1 on each hand) and now having the new little one to take care of I'm just not going to get around to finalizing it.  Was planning on giving it to my dad but he isn't interested (kinda hurts a bit) so I want it gone.  Looking to get a little of the $$ I've put into it (can provide the spreadsheet with $$ breakdown).  Asking $1,000.

Thanks
James

Edit: Forgot to add that I'm throwing in the left-over parts, engine, and other frame if the buyer wants them.
