Well it turns out that I'm an idiot and it wasn't oil I found on the plugs but gas. Took it into the honda shop here in town and had them do a compression test and leak down on it. All have good compression, #2 is a little low but following the leakdown test it's probably just a tight exhaust valve.

I need to get a new points setup, as the arm of one of the points has a giant crack in it. Which I'm sure causes it to misfire badly, hopefully getting the points setup correctly and timing done I should be able to get them all firing good.

Well an update for this bike. Finally got the new tires, seat and steering stem bearings. I'm still waiting on the oil tank to get here then it's off to get welded and once thats done it's off to powdercoating. On another completely awesome not, found a local guy who does custom paint and he is big into metal flake! Here is a example of his work:

I'm supposed to talk to him about the design I want on the tank this weekend. Oh I almost forgot, I am now on the second motor as the original motor needed a fair amount of work. I haven't fired this new motor up yet, so hopefully it actually runs and doesn't shoot oil everywhere.

Well hopefully my oil tank will get here this friday so I can send it off to my paint guy. I have decided to keep the original Honda design on the tank but it will be done in outrageous metal flake colors. Also here are some pics of my dads bike that he had when he was 18. It's a late 60s panhead sportster with a weld on hard tail. Dad painted the frame and fenders, he had someone paint the tank. He said that the guy used a playing card to create the ribbons.

I have the same rear tire for my bike! Now we can see where I get my taste in motorcycles from.

Here are a couple of pictures of my oil tank and the new seat that arrived the other day. I'm in the process of stripping the bike back down again and sending it off to get all the welding done this weekend. Once I get it back its going straight to powder coating. I was very impressed by the oil tank, the welds on it are VERY nice.

Great looking Seat and Oil Tank!  did you say what over all color you are going with?  I know it'll have metal flakes (Which is awesome!), but I didn't see a color.

Keep up the great work.

Well I think I finally decided on just redoing the original honda paint but in the most ridiculous metal flake he has. So it will be a darker green on the oil tank and gas tank. But the gas tank will have the original honda stickers redone in metal flake colors. I would also like to get my firestone tires mounted because they are going to look killer!

Yeah I won't be running any fenders, we will see how long that lasts I guess. My dad keeps telling me I'm going to hate it, but I think I will be fine with it. Anyways made some progress! Just got the frame back from the welders, we might have to move the seat mounts as the pegs on the seat don't really line up at all. But the rest of it looks good. As soon as thats sorted out its going to powder coat and the oil tank and gas tank are going to get painted. I'm also having my firestones mounted this weekend so I will post some pictures of it mocked up with the new tires after that happens.

that looks like an old Bates seat. i have one in the closet, same shape but it's a glossy lime green metalflake vinyl on it

The seat is just some cheapo seat from somewhere, I forget what it's called. Anyways got the firestone tires mounted this weekend and ordered my springs for the seat. Most likely I will have to have the seat mounts moved and possibly the oil tank mounts moved. I'm afraid the chain might hit the oil tank.

What do you guys think?

It will not be getting a rear fender, and I will not be riding this in the rain ever unless its a complete emergency.

I got the oil tank from ebay, its a very nice tank actually. I can give you the link to the guy that sells them if you want. Also Tanks are at the painter right now, and the frame is off to get powder coated. So I have just been polishing and painting stuff, here are some updated pics. Also I got a old school dual headlight setup from my friend!

WWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Just got my frame back from powder coat! I started this bike nearly a year ago now, so it feels really good to get to this stage.

Kick stand shortened and new foot added by the guys down at GM Bedford.

How much ground clearance are you going to end up with?

Kickstand looks good.  I'm going to have to shorten one myself soon and was worried about it looking funny, but that one looks nice.

The ground clearance is pretty small. But that is mostly because the pipes sit right under the motor.

Got the engine painted this weekend and started polishing side covers, still waiting on my gas tank and oil tank to start putting it together.

I just painted it, I bought it as a low mileage running motor. The cam chain seems to be tight and it appears to have good compression, so it should be alright. Let me just say that polishing the side covers is a PAIN. I really need to find a decent bench grinder, the one I'm using now doesn't have nearly enough power. I hope to have the tanks back this week and the paint on them is going to be completely crazy.

Dayton Guy,
I don't want to hijack this thread, but I had a CB500/550 hardtail a few years back (made in the 70s) and sold it on e-bay.  I still have pictures of the hardtail and the scanned copies of a magazine article pertaining to the installation.  Hit me by PM or e-mail and I'll send them to you.
Regards,
Five Fiftyfive

I think your bike looks pretty sweet so far.  Can't wait to watch the progress.

The issue I'm dealing with is this.....

That hardtail, is allready assembled by TC Brothers and I believe it bolts onto the frame where the swing arm used to attached with some welds to add additional support.  It then welds up to the top of the frame as your picture shows.

For a 550, the only thing I can find is a kit that has to be completely welded together.  They come as 4 pieces of bent tubing with some cross braces and axle plates etc.  I don't weld, so I'm trying to decide if I want to buy one for my bike, and if so, who would I look for to weld it up?  Would your run of the mill metal shop guy know how to align it up or do I need someone with motorcycle experience.

I apologize if I appear to be highjacking this thread....that was not my intent.

Nah it's fine, I'm not sure how I missed this post. But the TC bros hard tail doesn't bolt up to anything. The only thing the swing arm bolt does is help line up the hard tail section to the frame. Feel free to post pics of your hard tail 550 frame, I'm always curious to see what people did back in the 70s to these frames.

Did you take the motor completely apart to paint it, or did you just tape it off?
