swapping parts from a 1978 t a 1971 K1 750, will pipes work?
« on: January 28, 2009, 07:25:14 AM »
Hello to all, I have not been around the forum for a while (working on another project).  I have a 1971 cb750 that I am slowly getting back to original.  I have spotted a really nice 1978 cb750 with good pipes, will they fit, and look original? I know the stampings will not be correct. How about the front fender?  I am considering swapping parts, and reselling the 1978, although yes I hate to mess with a good  78, but I am looking for a better way to get original pipes without paying $1200 bucks on ebay... thanks in advance.

Not straight on as the head fitting is different, but can be altered, and the mountings at the rear are different

Yeah, I think earlier K's (maybe to K6) had the spigot-type flange and the later models had the straight flange?

I hope that works, I have a yoshimura 4-1 for my k1 bike and a K8 motor coming from a member on the forum.
I love the way it sounds and I'd hate to have to but another header.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Maybe the pipes are not as expensive as you think.  I think you can get HM341's for less than 900.  If you need a home for those 77/78 HM401s, you can talk to me :)

Here's where you can get the pipes: http://www.hondaparts-direct.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=126093&category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=1972&fveh=3000

Granted, that's just the pipes but most of the other parts can be salvaged cheaply elsewhere (like the shields, rubbers, etc.).

The way they connect to the head is similar enough so that worst case you need to install studs on the older bike in place of the flange/screw arrangement.  The rear connections (in my mind) would be a nightmare... probably mostly because it doesn't look right in my mind's eye... 77 pipes on a pre-77.   yuck!
