How do I remove Chrome from Rear Brake Panel
« on: February 25, 2009, 04:37:28 PM »
Hello, I have a cb750K2 and my rear brake panel has a chrome or chrome like coating on it thats flaking off.  I was wondering if anyone knew how to remove it so i can polish the panel. I tried searching the forum but didn't find an answer. I then tried sanding it but that just scratches the chrome, doesn't really remove it.  Would a wire wheel do the trick or is there a way to chemically strip it.  Thank you

If I know what you are talking about that back piece is polished alum and what you have is the clear coating comming off.  I used very fine sand paper to remove all the clear and they hit it with a polisher came out great.

If it is clear coat, you can take it off with Aircraft Remover which is available at most auto parts or home improvements stores.  WalMart carries it too.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I don't think its clearcoat. This is what it looks like, sorry for the crappy camera phone pics. the last pic is a flake in my hand of what i am talking about, its silver like chrome and copperish on the underside.

Your pictures don't work but if it looks like chrome and has copper on the back it is chrome plated. The term triple chrome plated really means copper, nickel, chrome. Anyone who does chrome plating can remove it by reversing the process.

No chemical stripper or abrasive will take it off. Probably cheaper to find a used part.

brake fluid....

If there's brake fluid on the rear brake of his 750K2 then he's got worse problems that he originally thought. :D

edit: after I posted that I realized what you were trying to say... :-[ ;D

There is an acid that you can buy that dissolves chrome, i will try and find out what it is called and get back to you.

That might leave you with the nickel and copper to deal with.

Sandblast may get it off, not much to lose.. or sand it off.

Thruth tho, cheaper to get another.

You could use EZ off oven cleaner to take off chrome and paint.

What is this stuff called?  Is it sold as Aircraft Remover?

Either that or Aircraft Coating Remover, depending on the brand.
