i AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY SHIFTER (HELP NEEDED)
« on: February 27, 2009, 05:53:22 AM »
mY SHIFTER IS STICKING?  IF YOU PUSH IT DOWN IT STAYS DOWN.  uP AND IT STAYS UP.  THE BIKE HAS NOT RAN IN GEAR IN ABOUT A YEAR, ENGINE HAS BEEN STARTED SEVERAL TIMES.  ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

NOTE: THERE IS A NEUTRAL SWITCH UNDER THE TRANS ON THE SAME PLANE AS THE SHIFTER, THERE WAS A SPRING AND BALL IN IT, I THOUGHT IT WAS THE N SWITCH AND REMOVED IT AND SEALED IT DUE TO A LEAK?  DID I CAUSE MY OWN PROBLEM?

THE REASON I REMOVED IT IS THAT I HAVE NO GUAGES SO A N SWITCH WAS USELESS TO ME?

What bike?

Assuming a 750, the return spring is wrapped around the shift shaft, under the left side engine cover (mission cover).  Remove this cover and check the spring (11) where the shift shaft passes through the inner shift arm(9).

Also, I'm not sure but the neutral switch may help serve to keep the shift drum in it's place?  It has a stepped down end that rides in the groove in the shift drum.

also check to see that spring #10 is in place, as i recall that might have caused the same problem for me a few years ago.

Perhaps your caps-lock key as well. ;)

thanks (my caps lock is on)  :-\.  I will check those springs behind the cover, i have not been into the trans so i dont think spring 10 could be an issue.  I will check this stuff and get back with you all.  Thanks for the help............

That should be fine, then.

The other question I'll ask is, how hard is it to move the shift lever?  If it moves easily but doesn't return to center, it's probably a spring problem.  If it's hard to move it could be the shift shaft seal is full of crap, or the shift shaft itself may be buggered in some way.  Either way, pulling the mission cover just gets you into the selector mechanism, not the whole transmission.  It's pretty straight-forward, really, once you get eyes on it.

cheers

Its stiff like its catching on something, just feels rough, tonight when i get home i will remove the cover and see whats up, hopefully something cheap and easy.  I dont remember having this problem when i rode it home a year ago, so probably just some corrosion somewhere.  Again i appreciate all the help, it gives me a good starting point.  I will update when i find something.
