Checkered Disc Rotors -- What do you think?
« on: February 25, 2009, 08:10:56 AM »
It's a work in progress, but here's a peek at my new twin brake disc rotors -- with painted checker centers and laser-cut checker holes.  The wheels are Excels, laced with new spokes to black painted hubs.

that looks pretty great. but wont the sharp edges be prone to snags? Paint looks good too.

think you can laser the outside of my rotors to look like saw blades? ha. that would be bad ass. the possibilities are endless.

Cool,
Hey try getting a hold of a rotary indexer and mill, and run them grooves up the fork leg all the way to the seals.

That looks pretty cool!

But I'm wondering if the corners of the square holes will cause cracks from stress and heat by focusing it into small points rather than dissipating it around the entire edge like a circular hole does?

Should not be an issue if you are using the stock rotor. They are thick beyond normal spec and all. I would still keep and eye on them but i would not loose sleep.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

The checkered holes were the brainchild of Chris Redpath at MotoGP Werks (714-633-3855, if you like his handiwork).  I've NEVER seen anything like it.  He felt it was safe considering the use of the thick, stock rotors.  He also milled the lower forks with ribs that extend up to the gators.  The calipers and master cylinder will be period-authentic/appropriate AP Lockheed finished off with steel-braided lines.

Chris is a former MotoGP Redbull Grand Prix Tech, Yoshimura Research and Development Engineer, and Kawasaki Factory Race Master Tech -- so I think he's on sound footing (experience-wise).

Make sure you have the rotor centered exactly, since you only get one shot to get it right, and if you're off by a smidgen, it'll look like off kilter.

Not much material -- about as much as you can see the concentric ribs versus the polished plain surface in between them.  Chris programmed it on a cnc machine.  I think it's beyond most weekend wrenchers, since you have to be careful to not affect the structural integrity of the lower fork tube.

I've seen slots, channels and drill holes on brake rotors.  This is the first time I've ever seen laser cut checkers.  I originally had Chris helping me strip down the bike for powdercoating, re-wiring, rebuilding the engine (blown head gasket) and installing the AP Lockheed dual disc set-up.  He decided to add some pretty cool embellishments.

if it is not already there, it is easy to add a tiny radius in the corner of the square.. put everyone at ease.

The forks can be done in any lathe as shown... easy..To go higher up can be done with an indexer..

You don't stuff like that without a radius.

Very Cool! I am thinking of getting my rotor drilled. As for the fork legs, BIG DEAL, I could do that in a minute with a hand file! Just kidding, I think it looks totaly cool. If it were easy, everybody would do it. It is definitely unique, I dig it! ;D

Lets hope it doesn't end up like the windows on the Comet airliners :o  I like the chequered inlay but not so much the square holes/turned fork legs but hey its your bike and a free world.  My 10cents.
