Seeing as how I need to make a rear axle, what material would you suggest using?
I have access to mild steel and 4130N.

Is using a street tire for the front safe enough for the track or would I have to run a drag front?

When I lace the rear rim, are stock thickness spokes okay to use?

Stock tire should be fine, but may have to be of certain rating (ie capable of speed it will run at.

Why do you have to build an axle? 77/78 should be long enough?

4140 is good, try to order ground to size, will save huge amounts of work, then just thread both ends..

Axle..
Well, I'm using a 77-78 hub and sprocket carrier. The swing arm is tubing is 1" wide and is too thick to use the factory axle. I plan on treading both ends and I think I have a grinder attachment at work for the lathe. Hmmm, I'll have to check that out on Monday.

As far as the tire goes, I kind of figured that a stock style would work. I just wanted a couple opinions from guys who've raced bikes, seeing as this is my first. I found a good looking one with a "H" rating, Bridgestone Accolade.
