Rear Wheel Bearing Inspection and Cleaning? Photos
« on: March 01, 2009, 03:35:28 PM »
'74 750k4.  I've got the Final Drive Flange assembly off and I'm spinning the inner ring of the 6305 bearing there and its giving me a little resistance.  Looks like an old style, and from what I read here, its pretty easy to replace.  I probably will.  My question is mostly with the other (2) 6304 bearings in the rear wheel.

How do I know if these are good?  The bike has never run for me, it was someones abandoned project.  Don't know the total mileage.  It did roll fine though before I took it all apart.  I assume I should be able to spin the inner ring of these bearings by wedging a couple of fingers in there? but I can't get them to move.  Is this the case for good bearings?

Also, There is clearly some damage to the drum side bearing (see photo).  Is this a deal breaker?

Also, also,  These are NTN bearings?  Were these ever stock or has someone been messing around in here?

I'd rather not work in this wheel if I don't have to.  I've read all the posts here on it but never done this job before.  Thanks!

Well, a lot more knowledgeable people than me will respond but if it were me I would just replace them, heck they only cost a few dollars and it's an easy job. The shield on the 6305 bearing is broken that's what you see but they should all turn freely.

Edit: I'll just add that I recently replaced my bearings and they all turned easily with one finger but were notchy and hence needed replacing.

My rubbers were badly rotted and cracked and needed replacing as well but yours look fine. Don't forget the O-ring!! Don't forget to use a shielded bearing when replacing one with a shield. Because my back bearing wear shot I checked the front and they need replacing as well. Good luck.

Do I need to grease anything if I replace the bearings with the 2RS (shielded)?  Axle, sleeves, spacer...etc?

I always add some grease to the double sealed bearings. Some new ones do not have very much in them. If you get the double sealed ones with the rubber seals they come off and on very easy. I also clean and put some grease on that spin out bearing retainer. Dan
