What would you have choosen to do?
« on: March 01, 2009, 05:08:56 PM »
I really had to second guess my actions yesterday.A fellow BMW /5 owner and myself meet up with Peterbylt to ride together on a Shriner's poker run.Well the weather started to become a little warm with the leather jacket on.Almost uncomfortable.I believe it was around 75 degrees,Anyway my fellow riders and i opted to ride the second half of the run minus the jackets.I am now thinking that wasn't a very safety conscious move. What would you have done?

I just bought a different jacket just because of that reason, leather being too hot for summer riding.  I used to ride in just a tee shirt and jeans, and I thought many times of what would happen if I were to hit the pavement with just a tee shirt.  I bought a Tourmaster jacket, all the built-in armour, plenty of zip open vents, zip out lining, and pockets!

I've been there, but when it comes to bike saftey that comes before comfort. It is a good idea to have two jackets, I am too broke for that so some times I will just open the sleeves on the jacket and the vents and unzip it just a little ways to let the breeze in.

I rode across the Mojave desert - it was 100+F...and I had a leather jacket on - sure it was hot but better than sliding down the road in a t-shirt...not to mention the increased dehydration caused by not wearing a jacket.

cheers

we get several days in a row each summer where it goes above 100 degrees fahrenheit but you'll never ever see me ride without full protection. being too hot inside either my leather or mesh jacket is ALOT better than trying to re-grow skin on your back and shoulders.

Yeah, I agree w/ all the other posts.
Then again, in Vermont, 100F degrees is very rare. :-\

I grew up with the 100 degree stuff and road without leathers back in those days. It was still
hot as hades. Now I ride with leathers and find that the leathers actually insulate a bit against the
heat. I do have a perforated leather jacket now.

I keep the leather on in all temps.  Even 100+ in July.  I'm pretty sure the very temporary heat from riding in leather in hot weather is nothing compared to the long-term heat from road rash.

Last year when the temps in Vermont actually approached 90+F I decided to ride without a helmet and had my jacket open...

You wouldn't believe how many people yelled,
"Vermont has a helmet law buddy!"

Just way too many politically correct people live here.

I bet road rash feels a little bit hotter than wearing a leather jacket on a warm day haha.

I think there is a time and a place to ride with and without all the gear.
I am spending a couple of months down here on Marco Ialand Florida.
The highest speed limit on the island is 35 mph. and the weather is usally close to 80.
It sure feels good to jump on the bike in shorts and a tee shirt and go for a ride.
I do find that when riding with limited gear on, I do give traffic more room and pay closer attention to road conditions.
If I was to ride off the island and go to Naples, I would want a suit of armor!
Anyway, to each thier own. Besides, you only need a helmet and leather if you fall down!

And when do you plan on doing that?

I did that a long time ago. Actually, probably more times then most.
But I have been racing MX since the early 70's.
If you are going out to push the envelope, ride in a heavilly populated area or are just not comfortable with your riding skills, then by all means wear all the protective gear you can possibly put on.
But even then, motorcycles are "not safe".

You ride, you decide.
