That can be welded up,both sides, then they can be shaped and dressed up with files and sandpaper.I have redone cases with 3 finger sized hole and no case chunks to weld in.
A good welder can build up,and or reattach chunks, rather easily.Inspect the top case in the chain area, clean it good and use a good light to see if there are any small cracks there which could be addressed by the welder at the same time. I put a chain threw a set of cases
(top & bottom),fixed it and that motor is still running fine today. That was in the summer of 1975.     Head

Excellent. Thanks for those words of encouragement. I'll go take a look at the upper case.

There appear to be 3 cracks on the upper case. They look superficial for the most part. I don't know if I should get them fixed. This means having to disassemble the upper case completely as well. Or maybe he can do it with everything still inside?

I managed to get a bunch of dust inside as well.

I would let the welder take a look at that upper case, let him determine a solution,I think that should be looked at! A good welding blanket is a wonderful thing.     Head

Go for it man! When I built my 396 for my Chevy I found a large crack leading from the oil galley up through the head mating surface. I found a small shop with an 'old timer' and he had me fixed up in no time flat. I know how you feel, where I live desireable old engines of any make are pretty rare.

The only advice I can lend is don't skimp on cleaning. If you have to disassemble everything to get it clean then do it. You can scour a main bearing pretty easy by skimping on cleaning up the guts.

Top case.
You can leave the topend on. Flip motor over and build cradle to hold it level out of 2x4s. Mask the hell out of the crank and trans. Might have to remove 1 trans shaft.

Half the battle is making the piece, your botom still has it so good. As for the point area, a bit tougher, maybe someone has a donor case they can cut those pieces off( bad part is  happens quite a bit)

I think I may need to disassemble and wash everything. There are so many particles inside the case now, I'm probably asking for it if I don't.

Ottawa, Canada.

Don't think anyone else is out here. I think some people are in Montreal, which isn't too far away.

I have a spare K8 engine (10,000 miles) in Boston, MA - we just got a parts bike. I was going to take the engine but you seem to be in more need than I. Let me know what you think. 5 hr drive from Montreal.

cheers

Thanks, Andy. Let me know what you want for it. Might help me determine the cost/benefit ratio. I haven't found a welder yet, but then I haven't looked much. In the middle of house shopping.  :-[

Jeez Dude don't give up.  I just read your whole post.  I'm in Ottawa.  There was  a fellow selling a complete 73-75 for very little money. He was in Montreal, not that far.  I have a bunch of spare stuff but not a spare engine.  Send me a pm with your number and I'll see what I can dig up.

Thanks Gary. I'm not giving up by any means. Just weighing my options. :) This is a running engine after all.

I sent you that PM.

I think the going rate is around $100 - ( engine <10,000 miles). Pick up only though unless you find someone to come by and pick it up.

cheers
