Dyna-s ignition problems
« on: March 03, 2009, 11:16:26 AM »
I'm thinking about getting a Dyna-s for my K8, but I've been reading some earlier posts about the ignition system dropping cylinders and other problems associated with the Dyna. How common are these problems?

Thanks in advance.

Keep in mind that most people tend to post only when they're having problems with something rather than when it's been working perfectly for tens of thousands of miles.  The Dyna-s has been around for decades and has a great reputation, but obviously nothing is perfect, so I'm sure some people have had some issues.

The Dyna-s in my 750 is on its second bike and has racked up somewhere around 30K with no problems.

Jesus! Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I figured that was my answer, but I wanted to make sure before I drop the $118 on the Dyna. I love tax refunds.

Dyna on my K1 still running strong after 5000 miles.

I'm onto my second Dyna on the F2.  It failed on # 2-3 after 1200 miles.  It was just out of warranty so I sent it back to dynatek and they gave me a great deal on a new ignition, so while I was at it I hit them up for coils and plug wires as well.  Got discount on the lot and they paid for shipping to Oz.  Ordered 23 Dec arrived 28 Dec at my door.

I'd buy it again if I had too.

With the Dyna triggers, the "dropping cylinders" problem is usually related to not having the gap (i.e., distance between the trigger magnet and face of the pickup) set properly. Usually, setting this right will make for nice, even spark. So, study your installation carefully, make sure this gap is even between the triggers. It may even tell you what the gap should be on the modern installation instructions: we used to have to guess at it, back in the '80s.
