O.K., I rebuilt the carb....
« on: March 03, 2009, 02:45:03 PM »
...changed all the fuel lines, cleaned the tank, filled up with gas and she's running...only thing is she won't settle into a nice idle, when it starts, 1st kick everytime now she revs way up..everything is adjusted per the manual but i'm thinking the slide won't seat all the way, maybe a bent slide needle?? she runs thru the gears and when you give it gas she revs out pretty quickly and picks up good speed but when you let of the throttle she wants to keep going?!?
Thanks for ANY help..my old CT90 never acted like this so i'm kinda baffled

Which dune buggy are you running with this problem?

You can see in the photo that the throttle cable is "compromised" (to put it kindly), and doesn't seem to be seated properly in the carb lid.
I'm suggesting the throttle cable is not allowing the slide to go down properly....

You still running without the air filter?  Does partial choke make the rpm idle rpm settle down?

Doesn't this carb have a screw stop that the slide rests on?  You did adjust that, right?

Have you a leak in the runner between carb and head?

Any chance the slide was installed backwards?   ???

It's been over 30 years since I saw the inside of these carbs.

The filter will go on once it idles...it's like a bent slide needle i'm thinking, because the slide looks like it's seated but i'm going to have to
pull carb off again and double check, it's not a vacuum/air leak..that clean..i've adjusted the air screw per the manual 1 1/2 turns out and i've run the idle screw in all the way and out til it's almost falling out and it doesn't change which leads me to believe the needle might be bent and slide isn't seated
I'll check tonigh if it's not raining as my water heater is in close proximatey
Thanks

I think it is a mistake to try and tune the carb without the air filter on.

Cheers,

Something you and I can agree on. The filter will definitely change the dynamics of your carb. Put it on and go from there.

O.k., i took the carb off and rechecked everything and set the slide needle on the middle grove put it all back together and set the idle
to about 1200 and she idles fine, runs thru the gears and OH yeah, i put the air cleaner back on before adjusting everything once more...i rode around the neighborhood for a half hour to get it up to temperature and check for any leaks..left one drop below the head somewhere
but overall it runs smooth and shifts smooth also..got up to about 45-50 mph and it was cruising along...there was quite a bit of intake noise before dropping the air cleaner on and surprisingly it's a quiet bike...Thanks for all the support and when i can download the pix tomorrow i will
