Chain Guard Clearance?
« on: March 03, 2009, 06:14:58 PM »
My bike has never had a chain guard on it and I was wanting to build one out of composite.  I was hoping someone could let me know what some dimensions are on theirs.  Basically the length it extends in front of the front mounting hole and vice verse on the rear mounting hole.  Next thing, and the more important question, what are the clearances around the chain?  I've got a '76 CB750F.  Thanks for the help.

Bumping this once.  If anyone is feeling frisky and has some time over lunch or this weekend, at least the clearance dimensions would be appreciated.  Since no chain guard on it now, my business casual work pants would appreciate it.  ;D

I would say take some measurments of the mounts on the swingarm compared to the top of thechain and get some kraft paper and do a layout, you already have the numbers in front of you to do it, now you just need the time. It is possible believe me being a sign guy that is usually how we operate to get our stuff to fit their stuff.
I would give you measurments of my 76 but its a k and not f...

Hello Beta,

I can't help you much since I have a '74 750 K4, but I'll tell you some things that might be helpers.

My chain guard is factory original all metal.  Even though I make concerted efforts to keep the chain oiled and properly tensioned, the chain has worn several spots of wear into the chain guard, one almost is on the verge of breakthrough.

I have read somewhere on this board that the original 750's (KO) had a chain guard that was at least partially plastic/composite, and that portions of that guard were wearing through and even breaking off.  Honda then redesigned and went with metal and changed dimensions........ so the bottom line is Honda engineers had problems getting this right.  Not trying to discourage you, simply suggesting this..........

Be more generous with your final building dimensions to allow as much internal clearance for the chain as you can get away with.  No matter how well you keep the chain tensioned and oiled, it does flap around in there far more than you think it would.......

I hope this helps and gives you some more insight into your project.  Good luck....... ;) ;)

You may not get hte exact answer you are looking for.  I think I have read one post about something from that and never saw it again.

If you look at a lot of the bike pics, many take them off and leave them off.

I found 4 on ebay.

My goal for the link is if you just want to get one instead of making one, one to mod or one to get exactly what you are asking for.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
