All I'm getting from you guys telling me this over and over and over is "hey, you're too broke to pay for real shorty shocks, ha ha ha, in your face you piece of #$%*."
Thanks guys. I really appreciate it.
Thats nice Inky, i don't know how much money you do or don't have, my concern, from years of riding all types of bikes and being a bit of a suspension nerd, was for your safety, sorry if this has upset you.

Ditto here, just want you to take good care of yourself so you're around to ride when you're 80.  Have you tried a parts wanted add for some cheap shocks?  I'm betting someone has pair laying around that they would sell for peanuts.

the shorties I put on are $60.  You really can't get much cheaper than that.

I cut the springs on my russian bike, and they just have a split washer that holds them in place, if i pick the bike up they fall apart. but it rides fine and yours won't be loose if you put the weight of the bike on them.
it's not like it's gonna fall apart on ya, it's threaded on isn't it?

What seems to be the problem with the shocks? Too loose?

Try upping the preload. They WON'T make them taller. See if that helps.

I coulda sword I told ya that when I handed em over. I'm so forgetful sometimes. :'(

And now......back to the bike Inky :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

If you need just a wee bit more preload on the shocks you can grind the lip off a spare set of spring seats and use them as spacers.

Any seat progress to report?

Nope. I've been avoiding my own thread like the plague.

I will be mocking up my seat with pictures of my "design" my materials and a step-by-step on me conquering this monster.
Greaserama is labor day weekend. So I have a month, more or less, to get it done.

Sorry if all the shock talk was shocking.

How thick is the leather you're going to use on the seat?  Anything under 7 or 8 oz will sew fairly well on a machine but it puts a lot of load on the machine so a consumer-grade machine might not like too much of that.  I have a hand sewing awl that works great since I'm usually working with stuff 10oz and up.

BTW you've mentioned the greaser thing a few times, you might be interested in the following social networking site:

I got no more sheep jokes.
I was thinking about making it flip up, but since there really isn't any storage room, it doesn't need to be.
Bolt on would probably be the easiest way to go. I completely forgot I'm going to have to make another seat pan.  :D

I'm not buying one. I've got the frame naked naked, so I can form the fiberglass straight to it really.  :) mmmmmm...... I gots an idea.

I'll take pics of that too. This time I'll be using the aluminum tape and wax though, for sure.

I disagree with the box tape/styrofoam releasing quality. I've found that it leaves the fiberglass krinkly and misshapen that you could bondo out but not sand out.

I've made a couple speaker boxes and a cafe seat. I've also "helped" with a hull and bumper repair.

I'm no genius at it, but if you cover the frame with painters tape, followed by aluminum tape (about 6 dollars) then put carnauba wax on it it releases very easily.
I'm actually looking to start making molds for side covers and seat with the help of my friend that makes masks and props for movies, soon.

I'd be interested in pictures either way. Learning is always good.
I'll be documenting mine well too. hopefully I'll have enough material leftover to do 2 seats, and Bens bobber seat. (if I'm any good at leatherwork)
I've found that fiberglass resin is very reactive to alot of things and it's trial and error. It melted a paintbrush i was using once.  :-\

Well thanks!
I'm gonna fix that line tonight and grab another can of green to fix it  up.
At greaserama this weekend I'm seriously considering giving a striper a color scheme and a go ahead. I'm not sure.
It'd be cheaper to have someone do it then to go out and buy brushes and do it myself. :D

Sweet cuppin' cakes!!!!

That was exactly what you needed... The green is a great color, but it was 'too much' sorta, kinda stuck out funny between the gauges and the seat but that black stripe is the #$%*es' tits! (the dog's bollox?):D :D :D  Really really good.
