So, last night whilst waiting for tools, I decided to try something
out with my less than attractive sidecover badges.

Hmm. I dunno. I kinda like it.

One turned out better than the other, the one I prepped more looks worse.  :D
The other one I pulled loose paint off, sanded the shiny bits, and then primed and painted.
They weren't supposed to be gloss, the can said flat, but I like the contrast between the primer and the badge.  ;D

Tonight I'll be adjusting my lifters, and trying to sync again.
Orignally, when synching was attempted, #1 and 4 go to 20 on the gauges and 2 and 3 go to 14.
Almost dead on on both of them. I tried letting out and screwing in air screws to no avail.
#4 does nothing, #1 makes them all go down. :D
At first warmed up, it would give up accel around 4000 rpms. After some tinkering, she's hitting 7500 now and it sounds pretty good.
The exhaust was smoking after I turned off the bike.
Uuuummmm.
Carb sync is about adjusting the slide height of each carb to provide equal vacuum across the bank.  The "Air Screws" (actually the PD carbs have "Idle Mixture Screws", are not for carb synchronization.  These  are for an unrelated adjustment.

Further, you aren't looking for peak values, you are looking for equal values.  The vacuum reading will change with engine speed.  That would be variable number one. Which you frequently adjust while doing carb sync with the main idle speed knob.  Then the second variable is a single carb's slide height relative to the others.  Improving or reducing the efficiency of a single cylinder (by changing the slide height) changes the idle speed as well.  (Think of it as a bonus effect.)

It is normal for a badly out of sync carb (s) to cause all the readings to go down (or up) when it is changed, as this usually effects idle speed, as well.

Do adjust the lifters first.  (Or, you may be forced to "practice" carb sync again after adjusting valve lifters.  Valves effect engine breathing or a per cylinder basis.  Carb sync is also an adjustment on a per cylinder basis.

Worry about smoking pipes after the engine idles properly, the head pipes heat evenly, and you've put 50-100 miles on the bike.

Hope this helps.

Spot On Lloyd.

Additionall the problem you described is generally caused by one carb being too high and "lifting" the whole set when you adjust it.

As Llyod said....Adjust the high one down...turn up the Idle...Adjust it down some more...then adjust the rest.

I've sworn for years to do a Carb video...A complete how to on the K carbs from start to finish...but I never seem to find the time...

I dont have time to read all of that right now, but i will relieve some of the dumbassness off myself and say, yes,  :D i realize that sync has to do with the slides, I wanted to know how bad they were off. which seems to tell me which ones need to adjust which way, or so I hope. I will come back and read TT's message in a bit, but for now, work and jimmy johns sammich.  ;D
p.s. I know you're right tt, you're always right, and, it always helps, because I'm learning!

Oh, also, I forgot ask TT, I'm guessing it would be easier to pull the carbs back off again to do this, but I've seen people on here do it on the bike? I think I'm just gonna pull em off cause they're easier to see.

To vacuum sync carbs, the engine must be running.  I haven't been able to make an engine run with its carbs sitting on the bench.

P.S. I'm NOT always right! (<----And this statement proves it!)

I *have* worked hard to be right more often than wrong. I figure if I live long enough, I'll eventually balance all those wrong things that occurred in my younger years.

You're wrong, in the statement that You'll ever be wrong.  ;D
I meant adjusting the slides alone. making sure they travel up and down at the same rate.

EDIT: so that's why you're so damned helpful.  ;) paying it....backward??? lol

I think the contrast with the glossy badges and the flat color of the side panel looks really good. Especially with those colors.

Inks...The slides move together...thier connected and pretty much have to.

What your doing when you sync is adjust each slide height a wee bit to compensate for differing volumetric effeciency.

Each cylinder pumps air just a little different than any other cylinder.

Syncing them assures your drawing the same on each. Thats why its smoother and makes better power afterwards.

Now if your refering to Benchg syncing....keep in mind thats just to establish a starting point.

I don't see any reason to pull them back off if the bike will run...

Just go ahead and Sync them.

Course to do that you'll have to actually read whats posted.. ;) :D

(Just go ahead and click the ignore now  ;D)

It doesn't? hahahaa
Damn. I'll read it! I promise! I'm almost caught up.
The reason I haven't read it completely yet is because I have to warm up my brain to grasp onto what TT says. It's kinda like making a child pay attention when there's toys right in front of them.
I'll need all of my attention  ;)
