$8.00 Pods...?
« on: March 04, 2009, 01:38:56 PM »
Any feed back on these things?  For 8.00 bucks they surely cant be great, but I don't have the jack for K&N's...

I wanted to switch to pods, Not only because I like the look, but my stock black box is shatty.  For some reason it wont fit properly in its spot.  I know it is supposed to be snug, but it is so tight the throttle wheel cuts into it about 1/4 inch.  On top of that the PO drilled 1/4 inch vent holes in the rear, so I might as well be using pods.  I also don't like cussing and fighting for a half hour every time I have to pull the air box.  ;)

those don't look too different than the Emgo's I am running. I guess they are as good as any cheap pod.

clean and oil them religiously if you get them
2 little air or 2 much dirt in engine no good

I bought 2 sets from a e-bay store called "sportingforless" 56.00 for 2 sets with shipping it was 63.00. They seem like very good filters to me. They are called Standard Power Filter.

Someone once told me "you spent how much on the parts, $200, and your putting it together with a $1 wrench" not the actual quote but I think it makes a great point. I have always said you get what you pay for. I am planning on going with Uni Filters, not near K&N in price but I think they will get the job done, and keep me "clean".

I have been known to shamelessly run open velocity stacks so what would I know about filters.  You want filtration? use the stock box and a new OEM filter.  You want looks, more air, or a dash of chrome? Buy the cheapest pod you can lay hands on.  Most everything boils down to a bell curve and a set of compromises.  Wives, cars, houses, bikes, and filters...... ;D

You do know these are 8.00 each, not 8.00 for a set. These look like Emgo pods. I got a set of four from sportingforless on ebay for 26.00 but mine are 39mm, not 35mm. What kind of bike are you putting them on? Nothing wrong with pods, except to the people who hate pods and say your bike will never run right again with pods and that you'll spend the rest of your life rejetting and then finally give up and put your stock air box back on and live happily ever after. If you want pods, get pods, but plan on rejetting your carbs.

i bought the same thing for my 550. remember the outside two pods wont fit between the carb and frame unless you crush the filter or cut it. i cut the tops off my filters, cleaned out the top cap with a dremal and glued the cap back on. looks factory and works jsut as well. good luck

I forgot to mention, I also had to cut the outer two pods and epoxy the caps back on (1976 CB550K). I also had to shorten the choke lever. Easy modifications.

If you have a '77 or '78 550, you won't have to crush those filters. Just an FYI, speaking from experience  ;)

They're Emgo and I have a set, they aren't horrible filters, but when you clamp the rubber to the carb you'll notice you get a bit of a gap between the rubber and the carb side of the filter...

I used the original Honda clamps instead of the big automotive style hose clamps that come with the Emgos. I had to get screws for the clamps that are a little longer because rubber is thicker on the pods. Looks nicer than the big hose clamps and the thinner clamps make that gap not as bad.

nothing wrong with the holes drilled in the stock airbox.. you don't mean they're drilled in the plenum do you? the airbox serves to stabilize the air pressure across all four, and the rubbers between the plenum have a venturi and act like little velocity stacks. drilling holes in the airbox gets more air in there while maintaining its other characteristics. you'll never get as much air to the carbs as with pods or stacks if you're going for maximum fill (having a hot cam and ported head, etc.) at high RPM, but otherwise the airbox will behave much better. do a search for "cb550 pods" and you'll come up with lots of informative posts, especially from two tired.

Nope......for less than $50 for all 4.....you didn't get K&Ns....mine were $40 a pop 3 or 4 years ago from Dennis Kirks. I would imagine they are even more by now.

Just b.t.w., your carburation starts at the air-box (or pods ) and ends at the tip of the exhaust,,it's a system .

Pods can work well with any exhaust, stock or modified, it's just a matter of jetting properly. Most aftermarket exhausts can be installed on SOHC Hondas with no rejetting. Pods, however, will always require rejetting.

In addition to the stock airbox being drilled out, I discovered today that the mains have 135 stamped into the top.  I think stock is around 105.  Any clue as to why the PO went stock airbox, but jetted to 135?  I may have to get pods or jet down.  At least it explains why I have had problems leaning the mix.  That is what I get for assuming it was all stock.   :-\

That's easy, stock airbox and 135 mains ? , this bike was obviously imported from Israel where it was only ridden on the Dead Sea ring-road at 1,300 ft. BELOW sea level !!!
