« on: February 23, 2009, 04:57:35 PM »
Anyone know if you have to have the title to register a 1974 and older motorcycle in the state of mississippi. I am thinking about buying a project for less than 200 and it doesnt have a title?

Ask your local DMV.  Florida requires a title but Alabama and Georgia do not.  I just went through ITS Titles in Nevada.  I mailed them the stuff on the 30th of January and got it back on the 11th I think.  Would have been even faster with faxing, I used snail mail.  $85 if you need it...

According to http://www.dmv.org/ms-mississippi/state-regulations.php you can't buy a motor vehicle without a title. I did and found out the hard way. The seller should request the title if it was previously titled in MS.

That's for cars, though.  Some states have different and/or fewer requirements for motorcycles.  Especially older ones.

I bought my 75 in VA with no title. All I had to do for AL was bring the bill of sale and the bike to a local LEO inspector, he verified the numbers, typed up some of his own paperwork, and we sent it off to AL. Got a title in my name a few weeks later....

Hey Andy...
I'm in Starkville, MS...
Haven't checked in a while, but vehicles before 1969 did not have to be titled...after that they did. Also if it was ever titled in MS...then it would show up and have to have a title.
There used to be ways around some of the rule if the title was lost.
Check with you local Tax assessors office...they should be able to tell what you need.
Good Luck!!!

I did like hcritz said and called the tax collectors office.
NO HELP.
They said you can't get registered without a title. I told them I didn't have it and can't contact the PO. Also told them it was a MC from 1977 and only paid $300. They said my only option was to get a bond packet and go through an insurance agency. The PO said something about a bonded title when I tried to get a title from him. Said it would cost $150.
If anyone knows of a better way to do it please let me know.
I will check out ITS titles.
Thanks

I think it's called the tax commission, i.e. the place you get license plates, not where you get drivers license.

If anybody is still interested, I found out what the process is.
Go to the courthouse and get a bond packet. Find the NADA value of the bike. The bond is 1.5 times the value of the bike. I think they use somewhere between the Excellent and Very Good pricing. There was a number to call and they told me it would be $2000 bond. Take it to an insurance agent for a bonded title. Price is $15 per $1000 of bond, but a minimum of $50.
I gave it all to my insurance agent today, so hopefully by this afternoon I will have a bonded title. I think if no one claims it after three years it doesn't have to be bonded any more.

Interesting.  I've never heard of doing it that way.  I imagine you could do that in any state.  I wonder what happens if somone pops up and says it's their bike..   ???
