cb550 is squirrely
« on: March 05, 2009, 05:57:52 PM »
??? thought I had this one licked. replaced both sprockets and adjusters, now when on center stand rear wheal has no play as it shouldn't (did before ergo the new drivetrain)  the rear shocks were adjusted to light and the swing arm has no side play. When I am doing like 40mph or even 20 I can wiggle the handle bars 9 oclock to 8oclock and it feels like the rear is just squirrely. I don't get it .  Wish I had another to ride to see if it was just me  or something

Is there air in the tire?

yep, recommended pressure checked.
This was the issue I was having that I posted in a previous post I thought I had it nailed. I found wiggle in the rear tire and accessed this to be the culprit however it would seem that after a new chain and both sprockets that it is still feeling squirrely to me . Pisses me off.

swingarm knackered or rear wheel bearings might be cactus, plus a warped wheel will not help either...

How extrememly dangerous do you think this is  to ride like this ?  I think if I just cruise around 50-55 shoudln't be to big an issue.

I think its fairly unsafe. I had slight play in my swing arm bushings and after fixing it my bike stopped being jumpy in the front?? How many miles on your 550? Mine needed the change with only 13k miles. the new chain and sprockets might wear faster if thats the problem. It wasnt that hard to do now that its done but it is a dirty job. once the a$$ is out youll want to do some cleaning for aesthetic purposes.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Chain and sprockets have no effect on back-end feeling 'squirrely'
No swing-arm  side-to-side movement ?...back tire good and inflated o.k. ?
Whats left?...rear shocks too soft and front tire ( yes ) air low.

BUT, is back wheel aligned with front wheel ?...use a straight-edge between back tire (tyre in EU ! ) and front tire..remember, front tire is narrower than back..blah, blah..you can do this !

How are your steering bearings?  Put the bike on the centerstand or jack it up to get the front wheel off the ground, then slowly turn your handlebars from left to right looking for any notchy areas.  My nighthawk had a bad feel to it before I failed inspection for head bearings, swapped them out for tapered rollers and it handled so much better.  How're your wheel bearings??

I remember when i took the MSF course one of the bikes I rode had a horrible feeling of shifting sideways when you'd change lean direction past center, I figured it was swingarm bushings, I'd hate to have tried riding that thing faster than 15mph.

Just thinking out loud here.... spokes? Are they all there? Do they make a "ting" sound when struck with a screwdriver?

I would imagine if there were some loose spokes you could experience a "sqirrely" sensation...

Lets see, spokes good, swing arm bushings good, and tire pressure good.
gonna check the bearings for notchyness and check th elignment in the morning.
