steering issue found (PICs)
« on: February 24, 2009, 08:15:50 PM »
Hey All,
I got some tappered bearings for the Wing in about 2 months ago. They never felt good and last couple day's my steering has got scary. So I took the triple out and to my surprise it look's like I have the wrong bearing on the bottom. I don't have my measuring tool's here now there at work. Just from eyeballing it it appears to be a smaller bearing on the 75 lower triple then the 78 I have as a comparison.
That is why then I could never get it tight up front.

I think I just found my issue. :)

It appears to me that there should be a spacer above that race on the 75. It looks like the 78 has it in your pictures.

I do recall something along those lines being included in the All Balls kit for the 750. But if you bought generic bearings you wouldn't have gotten the spacer.

The tapered bearing kits I have had come with a thick spacer for the bottom bearing (goes between the bearing and seal on the steering stem-early GL) to compensate for the difference and the gap that is shown. If the spacer is left out, the frame (at the lower bearing) would usually rub on the bottom triple tree.
If the bottom bearings and frames pictured are the GL 1000, then the 78 would be bigger (outside diameter) by 5mm and if the early steering bearing kit was used on it, it would probably fall out.
