Build Thread - The Aphid, 75 cb550F Super Sport
« on: March 06, 2009, 06:05:30 PM »
So I've put it off for long enough.

I am going to start my build thread. I was trying to wait till I was all done and I had everything ready, but I just realized I have a lot of damn pictures so I had better get started.

The pictures are not great, but here is what I started with. Some screwed up "chopper" with aftermarket forks that made this thing a death trap to ride.

Those are pictures of it on the day I bought it.

So I did the normal stuff. Cleaned the carbs, changed the plugs, flushed the gas tank, changed the oil and filter, new fuel lines and filters, replaced all the cables. The bike had been sitting for a while so it had some work to be done.

So the next part is the important part, although I did not photograph it. I got a set of 750 forks and slapped them on. I then upgradded the entire front end.

Here is the end result of that.

Okay it's time for drinks. I'll pick this up later.

(pictures to come)
So at this point it was rideable. Though that's never good enough for my OCD self.

Hmm crap brown color? I don't think so...

I said to myself at this point, well I can probably mix up something close to the original candy apple green. I am a fan of the color green so why not.

So I went to the book of color chips and opened it up to the green section of peral metallic colors and wham there it was staring at me. Aphid green. I love it.

A few trial and errors of mixing this stuff, as there were about 10 different colors in it, I had it right finally. I got to work.

First step was to sand down the side cover. It was some BS aftermarket part. It was flimsy but it had a lot of paint over it. So I busted out the pneumatic sander and went to town. Got almost everything off. Okay check. Next the tank.

Got that tank off and put it in the vat of laquer thinner and let it soak for about thirty minutes then went to town on it with the blaster. Clean as a whistle!!

Washed it off with warm soap and water. Hung it up with the side cover and proceeded to paint it. It was starting to look good finally. Got both of them fully painted then moved the side cover to another rack for more painting and started to preheat the tank.

Rattle can clear for the side cover and clear powder coat for the tank.

Perfect, now we are talkin.

Reassemble, lookin good. Something is still not right....

I thought and thought and thought. What could it possibly be?

Way too much chrome! That's the ticket!

Is that green an OEM color? I like green too. Not being green, for every Prius I see I light a green garbage bag on fire and watch the soot float up up and away.

Joking!

Anyway, I'm following this... thanks for saving another from hacked up hell! Interesting pipes too.

Lmao... "Obviously global warming is a conspiracy started by Energizer and Duracell."

The green color, which I will put pictures up of when I get home, was just a color that I found when looking for that candy apple green or something close to it. It ended up not being even close, but I like it all the same. I am even going a shade brighter this time around.

If there is any work you'd like to trade.... I had a damn mishap with my turbo wheels and the idiot dealer I work for.

Like maybe a 550 roller.... or anything. lol.

I actually, depsite the crappy handling, like the look of tall fork bikes. Reminds me of my dad's bike in the 70's.

I just don't know man. I am not modding the crap out of my bike. Changing very few things other than the appearance really. Unless you could some how get a giant wrinkle out of my front fender. I have been trying and trying and trying but I can't get it. Can't bondo it either because I need to powder it.

No worries. I just purchased a busa swingarm so..... guess after this season I'll be needing new wheels anyway.

It sucks though. They were pristine wheels and the moron tire guy tried to snap em in half.

Okay so I finally got my head out of my butt. I think you all know what the stock parts look like so as I reattach them I will post pics.

First thing I have to do is weld the frame and get it powder coated. I will take before and after pictures and then start posting them and reassembeling the bike, so look for that in the next month or so.

I pretty much have everything I need done minus the engine and the wheels.

So after a long hiatus I am getting going on this thing again. Working on the engine at the moment. I am going to try and have it all the way apart by next weekend. Does anyone have any tips or things I should be careful for while either taking it appart (it's just the case right now) or putting it back together?

I also just ordered some parts. Carb rebuild kit, wheel bearings, new chain, sprockets, and other misc. items. It's like an early Christmas.

So I'm going to put some pictures of my pistons up, I don't know what a healthy one looks like so any advice is appreciated. New rings? Just hone them? Like an idiot I did not keep them in order so I don't remember which one is which cylinder.

Also a piece broke off the bar the holds and operates the carbs to the little carb frame, do you think I can find a replacement part (have not been able to do so yet) or do I need to just get a new bar?

Here is the carb thing.... it was a little round metal thing that broke near the end.

Post the fing cylinders.... lol.

You can tell condition better from the cylinder walls that you can looking at the tops of the pistons.

Any angle that shows the condition of the walls....

Any scratches, grooves at the tops/bottoms, serious discoloration (bluing), anything?

Little bit of wear on the sides, the very top of one of them is half black and then brown, the rest are black.
