How many of you gentlemen have modern bikes??
« on: October 14, 2005, 06:01:13 PM »
By modern I mean something 5 or 6 years old. I love my CB but time marches on and the newer bikes are great. I know this because I've ridden quite a while and the power, handling and brakes are something we dreamed of in the 70's and 80's. This goes for even sport tourers like the FJ1300. I'm very interested to see the responses.

Except for the /2 and the Chief, my other bikes are way faster than I am. When I can wring each one out like a wet dish-rag, and a miracle happens and I get rich, I might consider something newer.

2001 ZRX1200R.  Nice bike, just doesn't sound as good as the F.  Had an SV650S last year that I traded in for the Z, didn't like the Uberaggressive bar position of the SV.  Very nice motor and brakes, tho.  Made me realize how incredibly frighteningly bad the brakes on my 78 cb400T are.   :o

The Z is very close in size and weight to the 750, but I still like the looks of the 750 better.  Good brakes, very fast, not as good fuel economy as the 750.  Does have a bit of a fairing, which makes highway riding a whole lot easier than the Honda.  And like the sohc, also destined to be a classic in 25 years, as Kwak is only building them for Europe next year, and after that...   ???

Kawasaki 2001 ZRX 1200R is my primary ride.I like to hit curves hard at speed.  The 75 CB 550 I recently puchased and working on is just a trinket to work on and fiddle with. I've disassembled almost everthing on this bike. I removed the swingarm to remove the rust and paint it. The only thing that keeps the rear end of the bike on is a 3/8 in. rode. Now I know why I had all those speed wobbles back in the 70's.  Anyway isfun to tinker with. I just had the cylinders rebored and I'm putting it back together. Got the cylinders on.
Got the had on. Cam shaft in and upper cam shaft sprocket it on. I've spent the last 6 hours trying to move the upper cam sprocket
onto the cam shaft to put in the two bolts. There is simply not enough play in the cam chain.. I'm about to melt it all down sell it as scrap metal.

I could not live with an old CB as my only ride, but as a second tinker bike. It's fun...

I have a 90 CBR1000F and a 93 R100GSPD.  I bought both new.  They are both so good that there is no reason replace them with something newer.  The CBR still compares favorably to newer bikes of the same type and I like the airhead GS's better than the oilheads for lots of reasons.  Both have a lot of miles but show no sign of wearing out.

However, the 750 is the one I ride on a daily basis, mainly commuting, but it gets an occasional long ride.

Bodain..I saw what must be your post in the tech section- I hope that it works out(or in should I say). It will I'm sure. Besides me 75F I've an 1987 FJ1200 that's 1314(with NOS) and a Hayabusa. I've tuned the busa to 186 RWHP and I'm sure I've found my personal limit in regard to street HP(though the FJ has shown about 210 with NOS). I think my next bike will an ST1300 or something. I like to ride long distances but age has caught up to me

I bought my first street bike last year, a 2005 Shadow ACE 750. A great beginner's bike that I commute on. Now that I have the 78 550 running and tagged, I take turns riding each to work. The Shadow is nice - not too heavy, simple to operate and virtually maintenance-free except for the occasional oil change and chain tightening. I'd like to get a Gold Wing (the newer model, not the Winnebago) or a BMW k1200lt for long distance tours with my wife. Once the kids are out of the house - another 5 years.

I just sold my XJR1300, the plan was to go on long rides with the wife, somechance. In 6 months I did 350 miles(was in winter though!), brakes were fantastic, everything was fantastic, speed comfort etc. But it was a bit boring, I love the 76 F1 that I have and have ridden it more in the last 6 weeks since I bought in than I did the XJR1300... You don't ahve to thrash a 750 F1 to get the feeling of riding at speed!!

I'm not sure I meant boring, I think I really meant lacking in character!! Perhaps I am just turning in to a grumpy old man.. :-[

I have a Ducati M900, about the same weight as my CB500 and about twice the horsepower.  I still like the song my 500 sings as it goes down the highway.  It is nice to have a couple of bike so you can go thump thump or hummmmmm.
