My current bike is an'05 Yamaha V Star 1100 Custom.  When the weather allows, >40 degrees, I commute to work on it, 110 miles round trip.  Put 8000 miles on it the first 6 months I had it.  Great bike, fun to ride but reasonably comfortable.

Right now it's just the old 750, but hope to get a Vulcan or BMW within the next couple of years. That whole "don't got no money" thing keeps getting in the way...

Yes, modern bikes ( under 20 or so years old) handle, stop and don't need the TLC of an older bike but for just a penny or more you can turn your old cantankerous beast into something you always thought would look real good.

Just me an my old '79 650.
I can't afford a newer moto.

Some day I'd like to find one with a large enough engine for me and my wife to ride comfortably for about 9 hours. (with stops of course)
Why worry about tomorrow for tomorrow has enough troubles of it's own.

ST1100, great for 2 up riding with "enthusiasm". When the 750 came out it was considered boring by some testers because all you had to do was ride it. It didn't need constant attention to keep it running, stop oil leaks and start it. The ST1100 is like that too.

The old Hondamatic is it at the moment.  I want to get a modern ride for the wife and I, but have to pay off the car and truck notes first.  Not a big deal, it's only got 22K on it so far, so there is plenty of life left in it.

My newest bike is an 80' Honda CB750K that I traded a 70 something 175 Panther ( a Taiwan built enduro type bike with a 175 Yamaha engine, before reed valves were introduced.) for. The 750 had a Windjammer IV fairing, a King & Queen seat, luggage rack w/a trunk and a 4 into 2 exhaust (stock pipes  w/ jardine mufflers). Of course I pulled the fairing, seat and rack w/ the trunk. It's mainly stock except for the exhaust. My modifying is focused mainly on my hondas (64'-78') If I get anything newer, it'll be because I got a very good deal. So, there it is and now I'm gone.  Bill

My wife gave me the green light to get a Yamaha Road Star, as soon as we have $12,000 laying around.  Sissy bar, and of course, spokes!  Until then, I'm livin' it up on the cb750k6!

I owned 3 old bikes (CB350F, CB500K, Suzi GT550 triple...) before I got my 2000 VFR800 last summer.  I sold both my old bikes (the 500 and the 550) to float the VFR.  About 3 weeks later, as much as I liked the VFR, I realized that it was old bikes that really owned my heart.  So I watched the ads until a CB400F became available.  I really, really enjoy the 400F.  Couldn't be happier.

Then I wondered if I needed a modern bike.  After all, its worth at least a couple really nice vintage bikes.  But I've quickly realized that a modern bike is a real enabler.  For one, I always have a running bike.  And it serves great work duty, because I feel like its abusive to ride 60 interstate miles a day on the 400, for example.  Im not enjoying the ride, its not enjoying the ride.  Plus, for all its 108hp, the VFR gets beter fuel mileage.

So basically I need a new bike and an old one.  And since Im not willing to sell the VFR, I'll count on a tax return to maybe pick up an RD400.

wow!  trple you and i are in exactly the same boat except my modern bike of choice is a 92 zx7r (at least i think that is still modern)  the hard mileage that the 7r sees is something that "a little 350 that could" should only dream about.  besides... the 350 looks just as good posing as she does going.

Just drove 450 miles home with a ferry in between on my new '03 Suzuki SV1000S, Power commander, Twin ART Race cans, TRE, and fully faired,
What a buzz,  ;D
Now I just need to get rid of my '87 VFR 750 and one of the older girls. (No room at the inn)

By modern I mean something 5 or 6 years old. I love my CB but time marches on and the newer bikes are great. I know this because I've ridden quite a while and the power, handling and brakes are something we dreamed of in the 70's and 80's. This goes for even sport tourers like the FJ1300. I'm very interested to see the responses.

My newest are a pair of 1978 Yamaha YSR50s. Since then I couldn't find any newer bikes that I want to pour my hard earned military pay though the recent Kawasaki Eddie Lawsen specials came real close. Right now I'm eyeing on the new Triumph Scrambler. Being from old school and grew up during the 1970s, I've collected nearly 30 bikes from that era and still have them because I regretted every one that I sold. I also have Kawasaki ZN1300 Voyager, Yamaha XZ550 Vision and Honda CB1000C all from 1983. I still love the looks of the four mufflers in the end. But like I said before, new bikes are faster, lighter and even more realible. I just wish they looked more like motorcycles rather than toys.

They are toys....nothing that fast or powerfull as some of the ones available have any commuter or practical use on the roads (Not Track)

I'm getting in on this late, but my other bike is a '99 BMW R1100RT. Heck of a bike, pretty comfortable, reasonably powerfull, and near sportbike handling. I've put 700 mile days in on it. The electric windscreen becomes a must have item after you get used to it. Quite a bit of maintenance though compared to most modern bikes.

I'm getting in on this late, but my other bike is a '99 BMW R1100RT. (snip)  Quite a bit of maintenance though compared to most modern bikes.

As I noted back a ways, I have a '93 R100GS-PD with just under 40,000 miles.  It is more maintenance intensive than my 750F, just because of the yearly spline lube.  Plus the starter is getting weird, the push rod seals leak, the speedometer reading bounces all over the place, it uses a quart of oil every 1500 miles, and I had to replace the drive shaft.  (All that is what is known as character.)

In contrast, my '75 750F has over 100,000 miles, doesn't leak anywhere, doesn't emit any strange sounds, and doesn't require oil to be added between the 3000 mile changes.  The only maintenance it requires are oil changes, checking tappet clearances (haven't changed in years), doing the cam chain tensioner adjustment, cleaning, etc.  I finally had to adjust the drive chain a little after 8000 miles.  The farthest I've had to get into the engine was to replace the seals under the cam towers a few years ago.

Still love that beemer though.

My newest bike is a 81 750K that had been setting for about 4 years.I got it to get running and ride while I restored my 70,but the more I worked on it the more it got taken apart to the point it was down to the frame and now I am redoing it and still riding the 70.Dannie
