Apple iPod.
« on: March 06, 2009, 03:32:34 PM »
Anyone else ever had problems with their iPod?

Call me paranoid, but I have had five iPods in the last three years. Every single one of them had a hard drive failure.

Never been wet, never been dropped, etc. etc.

Before anyone starts in with the "Apple Sucks" stuff, just save it, not intetrested.

I know Apple is a shady company with inferior products, that's why I use a Toshiba lap top. Love it.

Any way, back to the matter at hand, anyone else out there?

I tried to google to see if this was a big problem, but I have not found anything

I wonder if it has to do with the humidity here? I dunno.

Thoughts?

I have a two year old nano.  No problems except that the battery isn't staying charged for long anymore.

I had 2 that failed from me unplugging them without disconnecting.
My latest one i've had at least a year 20 or 30 or something gig video. I do it right this time and no problems.

I've always done it right, but for what ever reason the damn hard drive keeps failing. I am trying to figure out if it's just me, bad luck, or what.

If you have it on something like a RAM mount or just hanging on your bike, it WILL die.  It won't take the bumps.

Other than that, The old iPod I have with a HD runs fine and know of no one personally that has an HD problem (never been on a bike).  Others may have HD problems, I do not know.

If you hang or mount an iPod to the bike, it must not have a HD.  I have run two shuffles (1st and 2nd gen) hanging on my bike.  No problems because of bumps.  I wore out the first one.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Get a nano, no hard drive to ruin.

Get an iPod touch.  It's well worth it.  You've got the versatility of a video player, music player, games/applications platform and a wifi web surfing device, all rolled into a neat seamless solid state memory package.

Had mine for over a year now, no problems at all.  And the Macbook I got along with it isn't so bad, either...

Apple is a shady company which makes inferior products?  Meh.  That's why everyone is now copying the iPhone I guess.

I was mostly saying that to keep the haters and sh!t talkers at bay.

Although I have the G1 from google and a friend of mine has the iPhone and she wishes she was with t-mobile haha.

I remember when the iPhone came out, the selling price was like $500 and then two months later the dropped it down to half of that and boy were people PISSED!

I have a Creative Zen Micro, chose it because the battery was easy to replace, the iPod couldn't back then. After very little use with no abuse the hard drive failed while editing track tag's.  :'( the drive in it is a Seagate ST1 I believe. I recently bought a Compact Flash card, the same interface as the ST1, not had chance to replace it yet.

I've had a 1st gen Shuffle, 2nd gen Nano, and now a 1st gen Touch. No problems with any of them, but they were all flash based. There's just something about carrying around a tiny hard drive that I can't get into - not to mention that Apple doesn't manufacture their own hard drives, so their devices are at the mercy of the HD manufacturer's quality.

I have a 15GB that I bought when they first came out and it still works fine. The battery won't charge anymore so I have to keep it plugged in though. I used to take it everywhere, but since I got an iPhone the iPod remains perched in a Bose dock in my shop.

No problems with either of our Ipods but no HDs here. I've heard a lot about the HDs failing though. If it's not too old, take it to an Apple store. They know it's a recurring problem and should be able to help you out with a replacement.

My wife has had her iPod video for almost 4 years, and I've had mine for almost 3 years, and neither of us has had any problems with them.

There's got to be something you're doing to them (albeit unintentionally and unknowingly) that is damaging them.  I could see having a run of bad luck and getting a couple of bad iPods in a row, but five seems like a lot.

I use mine all the time.  In the car, at work, in the garage, watching videos with it attached to the tv.  I've even dropped it a few times and it's still doing great.

See I completely agree with you. There is no reason for it, but I have no idea what I am doing.

-Don't leave it in the car.
-Don't spill things on it.
-I update the thing once a week.
-Don't drop it.
-Don't throw it.
-Don't use it as a makeshift hammer.
-Have a protective case for it.

I just don't get it!!

You should start dropping yours occasionally.  Maybe it knocks things back into place. ;D ;D
