Cycle X power arc ignition
« on: March 07, 2009, 04:06:45 PM »

I was thinking about grabbing one of these setups.  Any opinions or suggestions? Is there a better setup for the $$ ?

Sounds interesting for sure. Coil mounting under the left sidecover certainly makes for long wires. Individual coils built into the spark plug caps like modern bikes would really be nice.

I've got mine reserved when they become available from Cycle-X.

I've got a feeling that the coils can be mounted in the stock location with some minor fabrication of a bracket. I will let all know what I find out.

Do post pics if you are ahead of me on the wait list or just beat me to the install.  I am anxious to see it and hear about the whole install.  I hope I can feel a seat of the pants improvement with it over stock.

I have it in hand now, just what I expected.  It's going to take me a few weeks to get to the install though.  I will post plenty of pics once I install it.  I am starting to think I should order a solid state rectifier/regulator to make the system a little healthier as well as helping with mounting options... I could probably have one here before I get to putting in the ignition.

Any opinions on the best solid state rect/reg?

Not sure about them being the best, but I have rect/reg in two bikes from Oregon M'cycle parts and they work great.

Thanks for the input!!!

Anyone have picks of where/how they mounted it?  It isn't ugly but it isn't as good looking as some others out there.  I plan to chop this bike eventually and some of these parts might be "hanging out" at that point...

I have to say, a lifetime warranty sounds pretty convincing too though :)

+10 on the warrentee!!!!

i made a rookie mistake and hooked up my Green and black wire to the flasher unit (gound and switched +) and turned the key on and blew like 5 15am fuses :( then!!!! i pinched the main battery cable from the starter slinoid with the fuse box bolt and fried the regulator!!! i emailed him and sent it back and he fixed it (his warrenttee doenst cover that usually!) it only covers damage not to you hooking it up backwards... none the less he fixed it for free!!! i'm a life long customer for sure!!!!!!! i dumped my home made rectifer for Oregon motorcycle's rectifer its much more meaty!! 55A unit (vs my home made 35A that i fried in the proccess) and he has STOCK harness plugs that are awesome my electrical is solid NOW!!!! i just cann't say enough good things Tony is awesome!

as far as mounting that coil goes... its OK to have the coil that far away (its really not that far actually!!!) because your dealing with MULTI STRIKE AND 80K volts!!!! just make sure that you have at least 1in between the wires to avoid cross fire!!! and make sure you put in a RELAY to supply MAX Current and MAX volts to the unit!!!

if you mount it in the stock location that would be more ideal but i dont have measurements of the coil pack it looks similar to a ford 4 Cycl coil pack

You guys got me with all the good press for Tony.  I still don't think it's the best looking one out there but I ordered mine and the adapter kit just a few minutes ago.  Rock solid performance is hard to beat though, and I like the fact that there's a real person standing behind it and who will help you out if you need the help !

From how quick he says he ships 'em out I should have it in time to do the ignition and the reg/rect at the same time.  Or at least close to each other.  I will change the reg/rec first and then make sure that job's complete and she's running again before I go on to the ignition.

I got another tip too.. It was recommended to change the ignition switch instead of adding a relay.  The old ignition contacts might not let as much energy through as a new one so replacing it is a good idea. A relay will actually take power from the system.

I am going to check out a boat ignition switch ( since that was the suggestion  ;D ) . Something with a starting position hopefully.  Since my starter button is missing and I am hoping to clean up the handle bars eventually as part of the project now seems a good time to take care of that.

I have the parts sitting here and just haven't gotten 'round to it.  I did the carb rebuild first.  I have the power arc kit from cycle x and the R/R from Oregon as well just waiting to go on.

I've got the carbs working well but the proper routing for the fuel lines has me stuck.  I would like it if I could see a pick of the proper routing so I can be done with it.  The petcock only has one outlet and I am stuck as to where the right place is to put the T into the lines so that nothing gets pinched and I still get an all downhill run to each side of the carbs.

My wife will be induced on the 23rd if the baby doesn't come sooner, so if I don't get to it before that it's going to be a while longer!

Pretty much same thing for me (except for the wife being induced part). I am ready to start reassembly mode on the bike today. I will be a little bit before I am ready to get it running, but I am determined to get it running soon. Then we'll see what a mixed match parts lot I have will run like.   ;D

after a few little items for my bike my next thing is goign to be one of these ignitions!!!! i'm totally a points guy! but the idea of have 3 EXTRA ignition maps sounds interesting...

Ken said that if you ground the BLUE wire you get a semi- agressive map
if you ground JUST the brown wire you get a simi- semi- agressive map
if you GROUND BOTH WIRES YOU BETTER BE HANG'N ON EVEN ON A STOCK BIKE BECAUSE ITS REALY AGGRESSIVE MAP!

my idea was to put a DIAL on the handle bars and then you could "dial" in what map you wanted! ;)

I have this ignition installed and its currently in use  ;)  A while back I posted a pic of the coil under the side cover.  I haven't had a chance to go out in the country and play around with the different settings.  I can say its awesome, my bike is running great(extremely better compared to last year), i have seen an increase in mpg, and its easy to setup.  After this weekend maybe I'll have more to say about the different ignition maps ;D
