Titled vs. Untitled Value

I have a 1972 CB750 that I'm trying to decide what to do with.  Hasn't run for twenty some years.  It is not titled and I've used it for a parts bike but didn't get much off it for my 1970 so only a few things are missing.  Options: Part it out (least favorite), sell it as is (no title), get a title and get her back on the road, or sell it titled.  It looks like it will cost me about $125 to get it titled (and a fair amount of bureaucratic headaches).  I know its more saleable with a title but can I get at least $125 more out of it if I get it titled?

 I can't speak for anyone else, but unless I'm looking for a parts bike for a bike I already have, an untitled bike has a $0 value for me. I simply don't consider them as an option. As soon as I see "current title" or "non-op" in the listing I start considering it. $300-$1000(I don't buy pristine bikes) is my range, so in my case a title is worth that much.

   If getting a title is too much of a hassle for the owner, then I tend to think that they know something about the bike that they're not telling. Got to be some reason they parked it and never rode it again.

I agree with Scondon and tend to buy the same way.  If the title is on the frame.....great!  With a title you have a project.  No title equals parts.  Then do it yourself for more $$$

I don't care about titles.  You don't need them on older cars or motorcycles here in Maine.

Titled... a bike is worth what you can get someone to pay.


Untitled.... mabey a hundred bucks IF it's not stolen and in good condition IMO.

Thanks for the opinions.  I think I'm going to get it titled then I'll decide whether to sell it or start another project.  I guess it doesn't pay to get it running without.

Getting a title is a $85 problem through ITS Titles (plus the cost of registering in your state).  That is assuming it doesn't come back as stolen or something.  As a buyer, I'd say "wow, I don't know... no title?  Ain't worth much without a title."  As a seller, I don't know.  It's hard to say how much value will it add on the back end.  I can tell you I had a running 350F listed a while back that I asked $300 for and never got a sniff (no title).

Another +1 for ITS titles.  Atleast in MD it works fine.  I've heard some states are getting touchy about accepting paperwork from ITS.  I'd recommend going to a tag/title side business instead of the real DMV with the ITS paperwork.  The tag/title places focus on titles and know their stuff.  The DMV just kinda stares at it and scratches their head and asks me "where's the title?" until I get referred like 3 people up the chain to someone who knows what I'm talking about.

At that cost, a title is definitely worth the investment.  Here in California, if the bike has no title, it has to pass inspection by the Highway Patrol before it qualifies for a title.  That means you have to have a running bike that has all safety equipment functioning properly.  That means you have to invest and finish your repairs/restoration/build before you can take it for an inspection and have the title formally searched to get your title.  Too much of a hassle and a risk that all of your money and sweat will be wasted, if there's a glitch at the back end.

A frame with a title is definitely worth at least $125 more.

I've recently purchased -

1977 750 K complete bike, not running, (exhaust rusted) with no title

1978 750 F complete bike, not running,  minus a few goodies with no title

1977 750 K frame with title

1878 750 K frame with title

I paid $100 bucks for each.  If the complete bikes had titles,  I would have paid around $300-$500 for them.  Actually the guy wanted $400 for the 77 complete bike, but let me have it for $100 when he couldn't find the title.

One day I hope to have one complete bike out of this mess.  If I'm lucky two or a lot of parts to sell....
