Cape Canaveral is pretty cool if ya like rockets and space stuff.

The beaches are nice and there is good Scuba diving if that's your thing.

Take I-4 east to Daytona Beach and visit the NASCAR museum and take a tour of the track. Drive up A1A boulevard and go visit St.Augustine, it's the oldest city in the US and has lots of history. Drive south on I-4 to Tampa/St.Petersburg and visit Bush Gardens. Silver Springs is just outside of Ocala and used to put on a great show with underwater mermades and such. There is lots of things to do, just keep your eyes open and do some exploring and see what you find as well.

I guess the 1st thing I have to ask is... are you taking kids or is it an adult only vacation?

If you are there for a week, Disney, Universal and Sea World can fill your time pretty well. As for beaches, if you are hanging out in Orlando mostly, I would suggest you take a day trip and head down I-4 to Clearwater/St Petersburg area. Clearwater Beach is cool, water so clear you can still see your feet when you are in to your armpits. Great on-the-beach place to eat is the Rockaway Grill. (get the grouper sandwich) Head south along the coastal highway toward St Pete and catch a bunch of small beach towns/cool little places to check out. St. Johns area is neat. Gators bar shouldn't be missed if you are in the area. (there is a reason for it's name)

Have fun!  :)

I'd skip the Tampa area beaches in favor of the Cape Canaveral / RonJon area / Daytona beaches, but only because I like the big waves of the Atlantic over the relatively calm Gulf.

Definitely visit the NASA center.  Way cool, especially the Saturn V Apollo rocket and the IMAX movie.

July in Fla.??  By all means, bring yer Gatorade and yer sunscreen.

and quick dry clothes. it rains a bit most days during the summer. but just for a 1/2 hr or so. then the sun comes back out and refreshes you in a humidor kind of way.  ;)

I tend to like the calmer water of the gulf, but I grew up there, so i'm biased.  ;D

Florida in July = hot and humid. Sun screen. Take plenty of bug spray for when there are no breezes. Serious mosquitos eapecially around the swamp areas.

If you had the time after Disney & Universal I'd drive 45 minutes to Cape Canaveral day 3 or 4 and check out Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach and lay around on the beach. Never know when a shuttle might go up or return. I've seen both. Spectacular. They never conform to schedule however so stay tuned. We used to have a condo on the beach.

Now if you have a few more days, probably 3 or more, you might consider a drive to Key Weird, er Key West. Stop at bars along the way and have a fantastic drive over 100+ miles of bridges with the Atlantic on your left and the Gulf of Mexico on your right. Cruise Duvall Street and be damn sure to hit the pier where the cruise ships dock for the sunset entertainment. Not to miss! I've done MUCH scuba diving along the way from John Pennekamp Park to Key West and beyond using a chartered boat.

I really enjoy Colorado and the skiing we did today but Florida I miss.

1+ on the Florida Keys and Key West. Theres beaches on the way where the water is so clear  and you can walk out crazy far and its still less then waste deep. The evening we wherethere there you could feel the wind blow heat off the water it had to be +90˚water temp truly awesome.

Also Everglades NP is a ghost town nothing there since got hit by a hurricane quite awhile ago. Not worth it.
