Flu
« on: March 06, 2009, 06:07:36 PM »
So apparently I was struck with what appears to be the flu this morning at 2am. i was wondering if it will pass without the use of prescribled medication? i've just been taking ibuprofen and pepto bismol to help the fever, headaches, nausea, and diarrhea.

I had a that a few weeks ago, my daughter got it today.  I was sooo beat down.  Hangover type headache, throat was swollen and it was hard to eat, high fever, whole body hurt, had no energy, nauseated, my equilibrium was off (walked like I was drunk), couldn't sleep at all...did I miss anything...

It took three days with meds to get over the heavy stuff but over a week to get over it all.

I only wish this on one person, one dude from high school I still hold a grudge with from 30 years ago.

Just got my flu shot last week and the arm just went down, I know that this shot is not supposed to be as effective but it seems to be an accumulative effect with me, cuts down on my sniffles, flu, and colds and because I'm an old fart it's free, so is the pneumonia shot that I get every 4-5 years, now if they would get their act together and make the anti aging shot free I'd sign up for that.

my boy has it now.  I am sure my other girl will be next.  I hope I don't get it again.

I AM NO MD
that being said let me tell you a story
read a book on health years ago, the guy only spoke to people that were 90 or older
they all said the same thing:
work everyday, break a sweat
eat well get sleep
a little drink of alcohol is ok
take medicine only when you have to
on that subject the doctor said your body has a great mechanism to repair and treat itself
a high body temp is your bodies way of getting it's immune system up to snuff, too high go see a doc
most medicines do not treat the cold or flu, just it's systems
if you can tuff it out without medicines you body will produce antibodies to stop the next infection
i have gone by that lifestyle for years
young kids all around me with colds and flu and i don't get sick
all the time i worked i never was sick when i called in sick of working
something you might want to try

If you want to sweat it out you can use the old Italian remedy. Take some red wine and warm it to the temp you would drink coffee at. Trust me you will sweat. My Grandma used to give it to us.

yeah, i sweated it out and it seems to have cleared except the nausea and diarrhea. sucks cause i had to drive 7 hours the day after and i was taking rest room breaks every 30-45 minutes. the rest stops were strategically placed along 44 through Oklahoma for me not to have suffered too long, lol.

I've found one of the best things to do when I feel like I am coming down with something is to exercise vigorously enough to work up a good sweat.  It seems to have the same effect as a fever.  Most of the time when I do that, the symptoms subside and I don't get sick.

i don't know of other side effects but i was (and still am) finding it hard to eat anything. in almost three days all i ate was a 6" subway, bacon egg b-fast sandwich, and a ham sandwich. it took an effort just to keep it down but i knew i needed some sort of energy in me besides gatorade.

same with me, tonight was the first real meal i've had in a week. between last wedensday and tonights dinner all i had was a grouper sandwich, a slice of pizza and a girl scout cookie. i lost 10 pounds in the past week. heres to hoping they dont come back
