Project CR550F Factory
« on: March 10, 2009, 10:44:31 am »
Hello all.
I guess I should put my '75 550F SS project in here.
Hope it will be worthy.
I picked up my 550 about four years ago for $450. 100% complete except for the passenger grab rail.
It sat in my storage for two years.
It had the usual seized up front brake and gummed up carbs.
The stock 4 into 1 is probably an 8-9 out of ten. Surface rust only.
But I won't leave it alone. It needs some personality.

And so my CR550F factory bike idea is born.

After scouring many CR750 articles and realizing I can't afford one of those, I think my CR550 idea will have to fly.
I want this bike to look like it could be a factory built bike. Not easy.
My project started in November '08...

Stock bike

Stock w/rebuilt carbs/brake, Mac pipe and road worthy. Even compression too!
11K miles on the bike.

Acquiring parts...

Some parts include GFTP tank & tail section, Raask rearsets, glass 1/4 fairing,
Swarbrick pipes!, dual discs, Race Tech fork internals, shocks of some kind, oil cooler, sprockets, etc.
Looks like stock switch gear will fit.
Yup a lot of parts. That only covers the basics.

Fabrication!
Yes, everywhere. Anything that is not stock requires fitment, because... nothing fits!

Initial mock up. Parts just hanging there LOL

Tank and tail are all rubber mounted w/no glass to metal contact. Access to air filter and removal of the tank/tail is reasonable.
Cups redone in tank to actually fit the 550.

OK, swingarm does not line up. Bimota replica swingarm must be for a Bimota replica frame!
Narrowed the swingarm bushings and then cut proper spacers for chain alignment.
Now... no clearance for the for the brake rod/linkage.
My beautiful swingarm has to be notched for clearance. So it is.

Swarbrick pipes require sidestand to be shaved & the centerstand to be reshaped... Done.
Very nice pipes. Can't wait to hear them.
Dyna ignition & coils. Coils had to be lowered to fit under the tank tunnel. Small tunnel (thats what she said!).

Dual discs need their usual slider trimming to fit.

Jota replica bars... Junk, won't use them. I have Tarozzi clip-ons which should do the trick.
The glass 1/4 fairing has forked tabs glassed in to mount off of the headlight bolts.
Very solid. I hardly need the upper triple clamp mounting hardware.
I am waiting for a second oil cooler sandwich to arrive - first didn't fit.
I can't use the Earls cooler or super trick thermostat I have yet.
Oil cooler and steering damper bosses need to be located also.
Obstacles and more obstacles!

Wheels will be built by Buchanans. Probably 2.15/2.50 rim widths.
Too wide?
I hate to see stock widths used.
I am using 120/80-18 and 100/90-18 Bridgestones (yes downsizing in front).

Here are some more pic up to current.
Not to over simplify any work here. 50+ hours of fab/fitment.

I'm waiting for custom length cables to do a test run.
Then disassembly for powdercoat, paint, etc.

This bike is being professionally built. I lack many skills needed for a top notch finish.
My builder has welders, small machine shop, media blaster, paint booth, etc.
And a ton of experience.
Thank you Robert.

Much more of this build to come.
Thanks for taking a look!
Cheers!

yeah those pipes do look nifty. digg the use of clip-ons rear sets and the 1/4 fairing as well.
have to be honest that i was suprised not to find a "factory" bike after reading the title of your post. I like what you're doing here moreso anyways, so i'll look past it  :P

keep up the good work. how much does it cost to have your bike professionally built btw?

I believe that other seat/tail is Airtech. How is the width compared to the rear frame rails? It's not really made for the 500/550 frame and some I've seen look a bit goofy but I need something myself!

The pipes are cool, what do you plan to use to finish those babies?

My 550 runs a 2.15 front with a 110/80/18 and a 2.5 rear with a 130/80/18 and although everybody likes to think these bikes won't turn or handle with larger wheels & tires, but I'm here to tell you the steering is quicker with an 18" front and the larger rubber doesn't have any ill effect from my seat. Set the forks & shocks up correctly and these are great handlers.

Thanks guys.

The seat is for a CR750 long IIRC. Fitment was not workable on my 550.
It will be for sale as A BUNCH of other stock and non stock parts will be very soon (give me a month).

Exhaust will be finished in either hi temp black paint or maybe one of those jet hot coating type finishes.

Since Honda did not make a 'Factory CR550F", thats why I have come up with the one off Factory idea.
Duh!

How much?  Lets just say three to five in parts alone.

Love the look of it.

Love the stance of it.

I also love the color of it, is that the final color? or do you have something else in mind?

Looking good!!

GASP!!! :o
I like my Jota set better than any clip on that I have used. Lots of adjustability in them.
You do know that you will probably need to cut the center section to get them to fit(widthwise), or at least thats how it was with the set I have. I ended up cutting out about 4 inches out of the center.

Yes cutting out the center would be an improvement with the Jota bars.
Still, I have plenty of open area for the top fairing mount now off the bar mounts.
Along with a decorative 'factory looking' cover plate where the bars were.
The Tarozzi clip-ons have two angle adjustment also...

Honda red like the old RC's will be the main color.  ;)

No new photos to share, but i do have some more info on my build.

First. Glass From The Past tank leaks. Near a front seam where the neck is.
We sealed that. Also a non breathing cap came with it. Why? A small hole drilled for venting.

Not dogging GFTP,  but... Hours of time has been spent to bring this glass tank up to 'useable'.

Check your fiberglass work from whoever you bought it from!

I'm waiting on throttle cables, a proper master cylinder to operate the dual discs properly &
oil cooler sandwich among other things...
Oil cooler mounted, steering damper boss gets welded on next...

Oh, we fired up my bike with the Swarbricks!
WOW! Absolutely booming!
The pulses of the exhaust are incredible - it would have to de-sync a pacemaker lol.
This is with the baffles in.
The Swarbricks have the classic roadrace howl. And probably not too street legal.
The motor idles well and throttles up with standard jetting, not falling on its face.
Still, it will be jetted for easier starting and no leaness.

I hope to have some final mock up pics before the bike is torn down for finishing...
I can't wait.
Cheers

More CR550F !

Here are some pics of my CR550 before teardown.
Mock up is done. Its a runner.
I rode it last week and it feels factory!
No upgrade suspension parts are on yet, or the 18" front wheel,
so I'll have to wait on that experience.
Still a lot to do...

Here is a short run down of things on the bike...

Glass tank/tail section
Glass 1/4 fairing
Riser clip-ons
Oil cooler and hopefully a thermostat
Steering damper
Tail light/turn signals
Swarbrick exhaust
Bimota replica swingarm, notched & bushed to fit
Raask based rear sets
Dual discs w/rear mounted calipers
Race Tech emulators (yet to be installed)
Dyna ignition & coils
Shocks? We'll see about shocks...
Various TTR400 parts from Kevin at KSM, USA dist for TTR400.
Thanks Kevin!

The stance came out good and it will soon have an 18" hoop up front. Going alu shouldered rims.
I have Terry's cooler sandwich in hand with a trick thermostat from Japan.
Paint is soon to follow.

Hope you all like the way it is turning out.

Thanks to Robert Kelii for awesome work.
His fab and thought make this bike completely serviceable and rebuildable.
Many things shaved from the frame and many bosses added.
Two more teeth added to the rear sprocket for increased acceleration, or Maxacceleration.  ;)
Trickness abounds, but much is so subtle it may not be noticeable.
Thats the beauty.

;D

Just to add a couple more pics on my project...

Braided lines, on.
Soon to be installed is Terry's cooler sandwich which will use a spin on filter in a tight area between the center pipes.
The thermostat will 'float' in the 'H' pattern of braided lines from the filter to the cooler.
Line lengths will be important for a clean fit.
Looks like I will have to flip the cooler to clear the steering damper...  :-\

Fork sliders & calipers will have a fresh finish along with drilled rotors...
Also, I will put a simple cover plate over the bar mounts as that looks a bit incomplete.
CRG (or similar) type bar end mirrors will be used...
Oh, my side covers need a mounting tit glassed in along with major reinforcement...

So, all in all I am quite a ways from finished after the mock up.

But progress keeps me jazzed!

Cheers

Is there any downfall to running the brakes on the back side of the fork as opposed to the stock front side? Im going to do a dual set-up and prefer the look.

OK!
Project CR550F is coming along!

The last I showed my bike it was at mock up stage.

Now I have most all parts re-finished or painted/powdercoated.
Assembly is mostly complete. Pipes, fairing, chain, fluids, etc still to go.
The oil cooler and thermostat is still a major nightmare. Routing & plumbing is tight,
and with two different makers using different fittings will make it tougher than it should be to plumb clean oil lines.

Oh, waiting on shocks still. YSS are what they will be.
RACE TECH DROPPED THE BALL, and strung me along for three months on something they couldn't/wouldn't build.

Wheels are here! Buchannan built!
18" x 2.15 on the front and a 18 x 2.50 rear shouldered rims.
I couldn't decide, smooth or shouldered - But I like what I got.
Discs are done. Drilled & ss lines. Guts of forks have new springs and Race Tech guts.

Bodywork painted!
My fairing is still getting more coats.
Frame & swingarm got the powderoat as well as many smaller bits.

Motor has been degreased and painted. Other areas have a 'satin buff' to them.

Here a a couple more pics.
I can't believe how well the paint turned out.
I dreamed up Ferrari red with a gold metalflake stripe. For that 70's look I was hoping for.
Thumbs up to Robert Kelii who did the paint.
He is the builder also.

Well, does it have that CR550F Factory built look?  :)

Wow! Outstanding job!

Just a couple questions... What front fender did you use?  And you wrote, "Other areas have a 'satin buff' to them."  Could you elaborate on the finish? Sandpaper? Steel wire brush? Brass brush? Scotchbrite? Thanks!

Very nicely done bike!  RR
