steering bearings...
« on: March 10, 2009, 10:36:11 PM »
I read the StevenB FAQ on the tapered bearing conversion, but am left with a couple questions.

I have the Parts Plus SSH750 kit.  Steve didn't ID which kit he used, but mine looks similar; two bearings with races, and a spacer.  Am I to measure the stacked height of the bottom bearing, and compare it to the OE bottom bearing, to avoid the problem he had?  I'm just surprised they'd include a spacer, if it wasn't needed.  That said, I don't want gaps above the headlight ears.

I haven't dis-assembled yet, but am guessing that the slightly larger diameter bearing goes on bottom.  Correct me if this is wrong, especially if it won't be obvious once I have the old bearings/races out.

Thanks all!

Yes it will be obvious. The large diameter goes on bottom.

The spacer is required to prevent the lower triple from contacting the head tube.
As the height of the taper roller bearings may differ from brand to brand, I'd fit the bearing with the spacer and check for clearence.
Some kits come with two spacers of different thicknesses.

It's pretty easy really.

The kit I installed only came with one large spacer. This did the trick but left a mm of space between the fork ears and the top of the 3tree. Feels slick.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the guidance.

I don't think I've started a build thread here at SOHC, but have on others boards...I guess it couldn't hurt to join the family here...
