new to this forum, but a forum veteran. 78 cb750f SS
« on: July 01, 2009, 10:50:47 PM »
Hey..

I wanted to introduce myself. Hi..

I have been researching motorcycles and i have narrowed it down to wanting
a 78' cb750f supersport. I want to make some modifications to it.. like scraping the
ass end of it to make it a sportier looking bike.

I found one an great shape, in SoCal, yellow, 47k miles, $1,300k. i haven't looked at it
in person yet, but plan to soon.

what do you all think of this bike?

I will probably make it into a cafe racer with a swappable seat (so i can have
a passenger sometimes)

thanks..

Welcome, Checkflag. I have my own preference in the CB's, it really depends on what you think. If you mean how does it fare in terms of performance, reliability, etc., my only thought is that parts are sometimes harder to find for F series bikes. This would only apply to parts, like seats and rear brakes, that are specific to the F.

If the bike is in good shape and running, I'd say that $1,300 is not a bad deal. Check the FAQ, I believe there is a checklist somewhere about things to look at when buying a bike. If nothing else, it may give you some ability to knock the price down some.

It seems we've had a bunch of F series owners join lately.

thanks for that. As for the seat, i am probably going to have a new seat made for
my needs. In particular, I want a cafe style seat but with enough room for a petite
female passenger  :o Besides.. the tail of the 750f is in need of a facelift from the factory.

the rear brakes should be easy enough to rebuild if there's a problem. having disc brakes
F/R is important to me. I am not a big fan of the drum brake, which is why I like the SS.
Not to mention the tank is pretty sweet.

I have a Vespa P200e that I am selling in order to make the motorcycle purchase.

Welcome!
I have a 78F too.
If i could do it all over again i would look for a 76F bike.
Better looking, rear disc, better rear seat, spoked wheels, plus no valve guide issues.

$1,300 seems to be a little high for a bike with such high mileage. Especially a bike that is notorious for problems around that mileage. I paid $700 for mine with  14,000 on it and the guy delivered it 60 miles to my garage. (i got lucky)

If you are heart set on that bike, look for a puff of blue smoke a start up or do a leak down test to determine the health of the valve guides.

Let us know what you do.

Good luck!

I agree with you. 47k is a lot of miles. KBB shows the bike at $1115, and I assume for a
bike in much better shape. I do not think that i would spend 1,300 for it. If i like it i will offer like 850.

What do you think my initial mechanic visit could cost? What kind of things are most
likely to be wrong with a bike at this mileage. I want to add this info to the bargaining table. How could I do a leak down test while i am there? what else should i look for?

the more i can chop from the price, the more i can do to get it into shape.

I just talked to the guy. My gut feeling is that he is honest. He is willing to negotiate the price too.. so thats good. here's a pic of the bike i like. It has a kerker exhaust..
