1974 750 Tank Emblem in Black??
« on: March 21, 2009, 06:49:42 PM »
Almost done with my restoration, and am looking at my tank badges. They have never been "painted", but they are all black.
They have a satin type coating on them that flakes off when scratched. There is no sign of white, or any other remnant of color, just old wax.
Was this stock?
I can't find any examples like these in any pictures, they all have the white honda letters.
Although the more I look at them, the more I like the all black look.....

I've never seen one like that either.  I am in the middle of reconditioning my tank badges and have noticed that the white paint that is typically found in the middle of the letter fields chips off pretty easily.  Under the white is black that looks very much like how your badge appears.  The white paint doesn't seem to really adhere to the black paint underneath it.  Perhaps someone simply removed the white from your badges?

The "H" looks like it has some white paint on it still.... may not be wax.  In any case, it does not look bad at all black.  I should 'fess up and admit that I'm not a stickler for "perfect as from factory", however.  I'm good with "period feel".

Please let us know how you end up either way.
