How hot do exhaust pipes get? Glossy Paint Idea?
« on: March 14, 2009, 01:28:18 AM »
I was wanting to do my exhaust pipes in a glossy black high temp paint, but the auto stores only have flat. The VHT paints they had are rated for something like 1000+ degrees but is that for cars, or do motorcycles get that hot too? I know that most of the motor paints can handle temperatures up to 500 degrees.

Would the exhaust pipes on a CB350 get hotter then 500 degrees?

I have never used a thermometer to test the temp (would I use a rectal up the tail pipe  ???) but i have read many times the especially up near the head it can hit approx 2000 F. I used the VHT flat paints and like it. I would think gloss would show all the little imperfections from debris when you ride. Hope this helps.

headers should not be 2k degrees... those are combustion chamber temps.

maybe a bit higher than 500 on occasion but that is typical.

motorcycle engines are the same internal combustion engines that are in cars... yes, they get that hot.
i seriously doubt you'll find a glossy heat resistant paint... at least one that stays glossy after the first heating.

the 500 degree paint will discolor from about 1 inch from the head for about eight inches. if you want pretty go higher than 500.  And i havent checked how hot mine get i would guess at idle for a long time 500 might be achievable.

Actually, the headers can reach 700 to 800 degrees an inch or so from the exhaust port. Cools down quite a bit more after that first inch.
No.
