What's the best way to thread wires through handle bar?
« on: March 14, 2009, 03:32:25 PM »
I have to replace my right hand switch on my CB750. Do all the wires go through the handle bar and into the headlight bucket? If I pull them out, how to get the new wires back in, with a string or wire or something. And do I have to remove both throttle cables from the carbs before removing the switch? This isn't a trick question, I'd just like to do it right the first time.

As long as the bars are stock, getting the wires back in shouldn't be a big issue. They push thru easily. Cables come off as far as memory serves me.

Yes disconnect the cables from the carbs first, and the switch wires all attach in the headlight bucket.

I twist a light steel wire around the switch wiring and wrap it tightly with electrical tape. You can push/pull it through the bar this way. Make sure the hole in the replacement h-bars are at least the size of the one you've got, if not enlarge it.

Good luck.

I use 20-lb. fishing line and some spray-graphite.

Bit lost here !, did the wires run thru' the bars on a stock K6 set-up ?? If just changing the switch, no need to do anything with the throttle cables, right K6'ers ?
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

The wire/string taped to the end or the wires works well but I prefer silicone spray lube. iI seems to go away quicker with less mess.

In a past life spent manufacturing electronics, we used to tie two lengths of string similar to dental floss arount the wires, cross over and tie again a few times (to spread the load over a greater area) then we'd dust the wires with talcum powder and pull them through.  Some would tie a small weight like a fishing sinker to the end of the string just to speed up the pre-threading process.  Then with a sawing motion, begin to draw the wires into the bar, keeping an eye on the opennings to make sure nothing binds and is damaged.

  Sounds good to me.
